Nowadays, we do drive safer and are driving on safer roads. The cars that we are driving are much safer too. In fact, in the US, there was the lowest accident fatality rate ever recorded back in 2008. But even with this progress, and the ways roads and cars have been developed, the number of car accidents and fatalities can be still a little staggering. With the improvements in technology, we will need to do our bit to bring those numbers down, because at the end of the day, car accidents are predominantly because of human error.
One of the best ways to reduce the risk of getting in an accident, is to make sure that you are using some safe driving practices. You might be learning to drive, or have been passed for ages. Either way it is a good idea to remind yourself of some basic safe driving rules, or you might need to find yourself a car accident lawyer. So here are some of the things you need to make sure that you are doing to ensure that you are driving safely.
Don’t Drink and Drive
Alcohol when driving is something that causes a number of impairments that can quite easily lead to car accidents. No matter how much you have or haven’t drunk, intoxication starts to reduce reaction time, coordination, and even lowers inhibitions. So when you are driving, you can make some silly choices. If you have been drinking a lot, then you can get blurred or double vision, so it really is a terrible idea. You might think that you will be fine, but really, you will not be at all.
Avoid Distractions
There are so many things that can be a distraction when you drive, and if you are distracted, it can mean your reactions are slowed or you don’t see things coming that you need to avoid. The obvious things are not using a mobile phone when you drive. But music that is too loud, shouting to people in the car, or friends in the car distracting you and making you laugh can be dangerous. So plan ahead; if you are getting distracted, then make sure that you find somewhere to pull over. It is better to be safe than sorry.
Don’t Drive Tired
You might think that driving when a little sleepy can be OK; what is a couple of yawns, after all? But if you are driving drowsy and tired, then it can be enough to really increase your risk of getting in an accident. Dozing off for even a few seconds can be dangerous and life-changing, as you can lose all focus on the road. And if you are driving at a high speed, it could result in a really horrific accident.
Wear Seatbelt
There is no getting away from it; seat belts save lives. When they are worn properly, they really do prevent you from being thrown around the car, or being flung through the windshield. Even if you are in an accident, it can make a difference to how safe everyone in the car is.
