Watches seem to be a thing of the past thanks to cell phones. I’m here to tell you those people who think that are wrong. There’s nothing worse than being with friends or on a date and digging through your pockets to find your phone. Your company is now staring, wondering why you’re in such a rush to leave. On a more positive note, watches are sleek, elegant, can tell you a lot about a person, but most of all, a quick and convent way to check the time.

You’ve seen your grandfather wear a watch every day of his life. It seems so effortless, yet you have no idea where to begin. The answer:Minus-8 watches. The Zone watch does an excellent job bridging the gap between casual and formal with their simple interface. The split case design resembling a time zone boundary adds an elegant twist on traditional minimalist interfaces. The silicon band is something I would normally advise against because they are often tacky, however, this band reaches the balance between casual and formal.

Formal watches will most often have a metal band and their design will be more complex. You can still use a minimalist watch like the Minus-8 Zone in a formal setting if you simply don’t have the funds, but a metal band always looks better with a suit. I highly recommend seeing a trusted jeweler when purchasing a high-tier, metal band watch because they know an infinite amount more about watches and the gadgetry involved than I do.

Watches are an investment. Did you notice how I didn’t mention a price range anywhere in here? That is because watches usually last a lifetime. I still wear a metal banded watch that was given to me when I was 12 and plan on wearing it for the rest of my life. And if you’re looking to invest in the watch game the Zone watch from Minus-8 offers a solid return on your investment.

A fireplace, a cup of hot chocolate and a cozy Fair Isle sweater. For the coming months, more than half of the world will be layered to their neck in warm clothing, enjoying the gift that Fair Isle, the tiny island off the coast of Scotland, gave to the world. These colorful patterned knits have been a way to add color to a somewhat muted season of color. Luckily, the Fair Isle sweaters caught the Prince of Wales’ eyes who went on to popularize these sweaters starting with a tank top form. How’d you like that? A wool tank top.

The sweater is typically made from Shetland wool, which comes from the sheep of the surrounding Shetland isles. For most sweaters, up to five colors are knitted, with strands being intertwined and the unused colors provide the background and main color of the sweater. The term Fair Isle has lost its meaning throughout the years when it was used to describe any patterned knit similar to the traditional Fair Isle sweaters.

The great thing about Fair Isle sweaters are the ease of layering. I prefer to wear them layered with a solid button-up paired with either a pair of raw denim or wool trousers depending on the occasion. A solid colored flannel can work, however, be careful with any patterned shirt. The Fair Isle pattern and flannel pattern will most likely clash, turning your torso into a colorful mess.

Most knits you purchase from a store won’t be a true Fair Isle, but the price tag will make you happy. An authentic Fair Isle sweater will cost at a minimum $150 whereas a sweater from any big box retailer will be ~$80. An easy way to figure if the sweaters are authentic is to look at the material. If they’re made from 100% Shetland wool, you can be sure they are authentic.

Winter is coming. Be prepared. Equip your Fair Isle sweater and bring your winter wardrobe to life.

I’ve been searching for years for the perfect mix of antiperspirant and deodorant and today I can proudly say I’ve found it in Super Powder. The subtle scented talcum powder from Grooming Lounge is a perfect mix that goes on lightly and works unlike a lot of products on the market. I was skeptical of a product with the name Super Powder, but it works just as advertised.

Before even testing it out at the gym and other high sweat inducing areas, I thought why not try it out at my computer? My hands are always getting my mouse and keyboard all gross, so I gave it a shot. Much to my surprise, no sweat. After about thirty minutes, still no sweat. Even as I type this now post-workout there isn’t any sweat. Keep in mind my hands were rubbing against bars and machines and the powder still stayed effective!

What really attracted me to this powder was the smell. Most talcum powders have that weird baby powder smell that ends up meshing with your stink, making for a deadly combination. Super Powder has a subtle, manly smell that doesn’t clash with cologne or other deodorants keeping a clean smell for hours. Use this on date nights to keep you fresh for your significant other.

There is only one size you can purchase at $16, and based on my heavy usage for a few days it will last for a couple months. I plan on swapping this for my antiperspirant because unlike most of the antiperspirants I’ve tried, Super Powder is effective at blocking sweat for more than 6 hours. I would much rather pay a little extra for a product that works than a half-hearted antiperspirant.

I can honestly say that Grooming Lounge has a customer for life. Even after a few days of use, my body is comfortable with the reduced sweat. They promote no foul balls and there aren’t any on this guy. Don’t believe me? Try it out yourself here.

You’re in-between sizes. A medium is too big, but a small makes you looked like wrapped sausage. Every brand you try is the same story. You keep insisting that it is the clothing that never looks right on you, but the problem is your body. Yes, you heard it right, your body. You can’t fill out your clothes. Now a simple, unhealthy solution is to pack on the pounds, or tailor every piece of clothing you own, but then what is the point of that? Instead, start hitting the gym and get out of the in-between size rut.

The gym can be intimidating, but once you get into a groove, it is smooth sailing. It all starts with a solid program. If you want to look good, fill out shirts quick, and worry about strength later, find a good bodybuilding split which usually focuses two muscle groups. If you instead want strength and your looks to come later, a good powerlifting program will focus on consistent strength gains. I highly recommend a powerlifting program if you’re just beginning.

When I first started working out, I cared about how I looked in the gym. Over the years, this sentiment has faded as I switched from bodybuilding to powerlifting. I’ve always had issues with shorts either being too baggy or too short, until I picked up some gear from Respect Your Universe. RYU’s Discipline Training shorts are sleek enough to stay out of my way when I’m deadlifting, but provide plenty of room when I’m squatting. The pockets aren’t too deep for your choice of music player, and the crotch won’t be all up in your business.

I’ve always been the one to wear ratty shirts littered with stains from who knows where. Today I proudly wore a clean Warrior Tee from RYU apparel and never felt better. Made for athletic builds, nothing on my upper body was restricted when I was benching. The material was stretchy like performance gear, but felt like a normal t-shirt.

Start filling out those shirts, get out of being in between sizes, and hit the gym. You’ll feel better about yourself in the long run along with plenty of other benefits that don’t come from just getting a tailor. Plus, everyone knows confidence is key and when you have the gear from RYU apparel, you’ll have that confidence to push out those extra reps.

Say goodbye to those sunny afternoons filled with sun, fun, and a nice cold beverage and say hello fall fashion filled with shorter days, colder weather, and layers. Oh the layers! Maybe you’re still wearing those shorts in hopes of keeping summer going and you haven’t taken any of your cold weather gear out of the back of your closet. Here is your reminder, and while you’re at it, check some of these items off your list to get you prepared for fall fashion.

My personal favorite fall fashion: boots. Whether you like dressier boots, rugged boots, or the iconic Bean Boots, the fall is nothing without boots. You probably remember Bean Boots from your parents or grandparents. Wear these in any weather and your feet will stay dry guaranteed. Wool socks are a must for fall fashion. Perfect for tailgating or a casual fall hike, wool socks will keep your feet nice and toasty. Stock up now for fall and winter and save your toes from the cold.

Fall outerwear is a close second for favorite fall fashion item. Parkas have risen in popularity in the recent years, particularly army green. To add to these, waxed coats from Barbour will last a lifetime. These are quite expensive, but luckily wax coating is cheap. My suggestion is find a military surplus store, grab a parka for cheap and wax it yourself. Plenty of YouTube guides show the step-by-step waxing process and only takes a few hours tops. Chore coats can be perfect for a chilly day as well. Check out our chore coat article for suggestions.

Finally, we have button downs and knitwear. I’ll refer you back to our button down write up for all your button down needs. Knitwear can be tricky with fall fashion because temperatures are often either too warm for knitwear or too cold to only wear knitwear. If you’re anything like me, you hate putting on and taking off all those layers. Cardigans will be your best friend. They’re easy to take off and can be worn with t-shirts or button downs.

Here is your warning! It only gets colder from here. Don’t be behind in your fall fashion. Now is the best time to get geared up for cool weather, hot cider, and layers upon layers. Be comfortable in the cold and enjoy the beautiful colors of fall.

Business casual: the preferred clothing choice for the majority of companies. It’s comfortable while remaining professional. What exactly is business casual though and how should I implement it in the workplace? Before I begin, I’d recommend talking to your employer about what the daily attire is. If they can’t explain it well enough, remember that it is always better to be overdressed than underdressed for the first couple days.

When I think business casual, I immediately think button downs and chinos, colloquially known as khakis. This will be your baseline. I recommend checking out my OCBD write up if you’re having trouble starting with button downs.

Docker’s Alpha Chinos will universally be the best bet for business casual. Tapered with a little room in the thighs will keep you comfortable through those long days. These are hard to find in stores, so if you don’t feel comfortable, search for chinos with a taper in your local department store. You can find chinos in most retailers, so don’t be afraid to try some on and see which ones fit the best.

Absolutely no flashy colors. Those bright orange chinos you bought because they’re your fraternity’s colors have no place in a professional setting. Same goes for button downs. Any piece of clothing with a saturated color write off your business casual wardrobe. Solid pastels are a great start for button downs, but if you get bored, subtle patterned shirts like gingham or plaid provide a variety of options. Earth toned chinos like khaki, brown, navy, and olive are great starting points.

In the winter or if your office is notoriously cold, sweaters and cardigans can be a great way to break the monotony. When sticking to earth tones and solid or patterned button downs, your options are pretty big when picking out any knitwear. The only “don’t” is argyle. This played out pattern often thought as “classy” is reserved for an older generation.

Again, I can’t reiterate this enough: solid colors and earth tones are the real backbone of your business casual wardrobe. Once you get a sense of your office attire and gain some seniority in the company is when you can begin to experiment with what you wear. Above all, don’t over-think it and you’ll be on your way to success.

We’ve all been there. Becoming irritated the way clothes are fitting. Nothing seems to fit the way it used to. You want everything, but don’t wear it when you get it. Its time to take a step back and analyze why you started to care about how you look. Why you prefer to browse clothing stores rather than sporting good stores. Everyone should have a hobby, but once they become an irritation on every day life, it is time to take a step back. Here are some tell-tale signs you need to take a break from fashion.

Nothing Fits Right

This is the absolute worst. You wake up, put on your favorite shirt and realize its just a bit too long. Nothing out of the ordinary. Most people wouldn’t even care. But you put the shirt back in the closet never to wear it again. What is the problem here? You’re starting to nitpick every minute detail, when most people could care less.

Something that was once your favorite has been thrown to the back of the closet. Now what? If you’re not getting paid to look good, this is just a hobby. A hobby is supposed to be fun. A creative outlet for most to express themselves. What you’re doing is tearing down your favorite pieces and over analyzing.

Wanting More Than You Need

Ever notice you want to buy something? When your wants list becomes too big for you to handle, it is time to take a step back. Wanting is human nature, but wanting can turn into lust. Keep your wants list to a maximum of 5 if you’re having trouble controlling your spending. Whenever you see something else you like, you have the choice to add it and delete something else. This will make you prioritize what you really want versus what you may regret buying later on.

How to Combat this Obsession

Stay off internet forums. These usually have the highest critique rate and ability to nitpick the smallest details. They also contribute to buying what you don’t need.

Have some leeway. When I would go to the grocery store, I used to go through the same dressing routine I went through when I went to a nice restaurant. Try wearing gym shorts out. Learn to realize dressing well isn’t that big of a deal. Odds are you live in an area where the majority of men have a woman do their clothes shopping.

What to take away

Remember, dressing well is a hobby. Something you do for fun, not for sport. Don’t compare yourself to others and use it as an outlet for your own creativity. And remember while fashion can get tiresome and turn into a chore, style is effortless and all about you.

With summer quickly coming to a close, shops are looking to purge their inventory for the fall/winter collections. This means steep discounts on items you may have not been able to afford when they were first featured. Temptations pop up throughout the season, but no other time is greater than to capitalize on these sales. Here are some quick tips to score a piece you have been lusting after through the season.

Knowing how far stores discount is important. Some higher-end, small shops that specialize in certain items may only discount up to 30%, but department stores, such as Barneys, may discount up to 80%. The further the discount, the more regular sizes like Smalls, Mediums, and Larges will be sold out.

Check out the buzz around the item. If people are expecting the item to go on sale, they will wait patiently and attentively. Be careful because these people are vigilant and will pick up the sale item before you.

Use common sense. If the price is right and the item is in stock in your size, buy it. There is nothing worse than getting too greedy, coming back the next day and finding that the item you thought would get discounted even more is sold out. You have to use common sense to know when to give in to the sale. Plus, if you really wanted the item, you would have been saving, right?

If it was sold out before it went on sale, it will sell out once it hits the sales. Normally if items are sold out and then restocked before a sale, the store knows the item will sell. Plan ahead for the sale and make sure you aren’t waiting for nothing.

Its no mistaking that we all sweat and unless you suffer from hypohidrosis. Armpit sweat is an inevitability in the summer. Everyone sweats, yet everyone is embarrassed of their body trying to cool them down. As someone who sweats way too much and have tried everything, I can guarantee the following tips will conceal your sweat and have you back out in public in no time.

Say goodbye to light colored shirts. Yes, I know it’s the summer and you want to wear those pastels but the truth is sweat will show up easily on gray, light blue, red etc. Gray is one of my favorite colors to wear, but in the summer it looks like I smashed two water balloons underneath my arms. I now opt for an indigo t-shirt, which hides the sweat marks perfectly. Other colors that have worked are maroon, army green, and color block shirts where the top block is a darker shade.

Get a high strength antiperspirant. Certain-Dri has been a mainstay in my repertoire of toiletries for the past few years. Before using this product, consult your physician and see if it is right for you. I apply it before bed and I’m good to go the following day. Without getting too graphic, I have noticed I get clogged sweat ducts from time to time which are pretty uncomfortable and resemble a zit you can’t pop. Beauty has its price, as does not looking like swamp monster.

Fun fact: Sweating doesn’t cause the pit stains; it is the aluminum in the antiperspirant. The aluminum is what stops the sweating and is generally harmless because it is in a controlled area, but clothes hate it. I recommend putting on any antiperspirant at night to minimize the pit stain effect. In the morning, apply your deodorant as normal and you’ll be fresh the entire day.

The final step if none of these tips have worked: Botox. That’s right, LA’s favorite age-defying Botox. If you have arrived at this step, consult a professional as I am not an expert on Botox. It is better to hear it from specialist in the field than a guy who gives out fashion advice on the internet.

If you viewed our post on linen, we remind you that a linen shirt is a light layer that will hide the sweat. While these methods can’t stop hyperhidrosis or excessive sweat, they can conceal sweat just enough to provide you that confidence you need. Now you’re ready to head back out into the world with tell-tale rings around your arms and collar. Go forth dry man!

Linen is my favorite summer fabric and probably in the top 3 of my personal favorite fabrics. The first time I heard of linen I was skeptical. As a guy who loves stiff denim, heavy oxford shirts, and flannel, I didn’t even consider wearing linen. Boy was I wrong, and so are you for not wearing it. The light as a feather fabric is an extra layer you don’t even realize is there. Linen is low maintenance, looking best when wrinkled and disheveled. My standard method of care is to put it in the wash on cold and proceed to air dry. Ball it up just like you’d throw it in your hamper while damp to keep it wrinkled. Once desired wrinkles are reached, proceed to hang dry. Because the fabric is thin, drying shouldn’t take more than a day. Linen is mostly used for button-ups and shorts. I have a few short sleeve button-ups from Uniqlo that I wear almost every time I leave the house. And if you’re like me and sweat a lot, the extra layer will hide some of it (more to come in the next article on hiding sweat, so stay tuned!) I have huge legs compared to the rest of my body and I find that linen shorts fit me best because of the thin fabric. If you’re looking for something that will breathe throughout the summer, pick up a linen button-up or pair of shorts. You’re overheated body will thank you.

One of the worst feelings is waking up when it’s raining, realizing you have nothing to wear that you don’t want to get wet. You do everything you can walking into work, but no matter what your suede shoes get soaked, your good hair day is gone, and now you’re forced to sit in wet clothing for half the day. Prepare yourself for a rainy day with these pieces.

A good umbrella is the best defense against rain. Keeping the umbrella simple is the best (can you include something like this as the header photo) way to go. The header photo is a perfect example of an umbrella suited for men and can be found through a simple amazon search. The wooden, curved handle is a classic design and a 48” canopy is plenty enough to cover your body. And picking it up as soon as possible is important. You don’t want to be seen coming into work holding your daughter’s umbrella (even though that would be adorable).

For commuters, umbrellas aren’t very practical, so you must rely on waterproof clothing. If you have a strict dress policy and have to wear dress shoes, galoshes are a must. The rubber will protect the leather from getting too wet, which will ruin the dye on the shoes. I recommend Swims galoshes, but really any rubber galosh will work.

Outwear is last on the ballot. The Macintosh raincoat works well in a dressy setting. Khaki will work with most suits, unless you’re wearing a khaki suit. If you work in a casual setting, any outwear that is waterproof will work. Barbour will last a lifetime and normally you can wear them in spring and fall. A lighter outerwear is an anorak. Anorak are pull-over jackets that breathe well and repel light drizzle, ideal for long commutes.

Don’t be the laughing stock of the office with your daughter’s umbrella. Don’t be miserable for half the day. Get these pieces of clothing, resist the elements, and stay dry my friends.

Possibly my favorite all around summer shoe that can be worn by anyone, regardless of age, is the boat shoe. Originally made famous by Sperry, but other brands like Sebago have been producing similar quality boat shoes for years. While the boat shoe’s primary function (obviously) was for boating, we’ll learn that boat shoes have always been the go-to for the fashion forward.

Sperry boat shoes have been a household name for decades. The man behind the shoe, Paul Sperry, came up with the idea when his dog was able to run over ice easily. Mr. Sperry used a method that was used on tires, called siping. By cutting thin slits in the rubber sole, the shoe was able to catch on slippery surfaces. The nonslip shoe made it ideal for boaters. Boat shoes are also famous for their moc-toe (think moccasin) with oiled leather to repel water.

Since these shoes are normally worn in wet and hot conditions, no socks are necessary. The no sock trend really picked up steam in the 60s with penny loafers and continued through the 80s when loafers with no socks was seen as preppy. Because yachting was a main reason people wore Sperrys, Top-Siders began to be associated with the wealthy.

Today, the shoe seems to be reserved for southern frat boys with salmon shorts and a too-tight polo. Personally, I like to think they are worn by so many Greek Life students because they are always in style. Sperrys have been considered a modern fashion trend for quite some years and it doesn’t look like they are going anywhere. At this point, they are really less of a fashion trendvand more of a style icon.

When purchasing a boat shoe, think simple. A complicated, half tennis-half boat is not something you want. This is known as a hybrid shoe that they try to do too much with one design. This design is generally clunky, has too many clashing materials, and is an overall visually unappealing shoe. Meanwhile, a classic one-material boat shoe is simple, sleek, and only uses leather for the top of the shoe. Colors like Oatmeal, Sahara, and Tan are safe classics. Avoid colors like black, gray, and any leathers that are grained. Whatever company you choose, if you’re looking for one shoe to wear throughout this summer, the boat shoe is it.

In the world of fashion, cool is relative. The guy wearing a giant onesie is cool because he looks ridiculous. The old man wearing Air Force Ones is cool because older men generally don’t wear a popular streetwear sneaker. But is the fashion conscious twenty or thirty-something cool with a pair of Birkenstocks? I’m here to answer that question!

In recent trends, loud prints like floral and paisley have been emerging through high end designers, trickling down to fast fashion retailers, such as Uniqlo or H&M. These loud prints have always been lurking on tourists and your parents, but as the fashion scene switches to “dadcore,” Birkenstocks are becoming more common.

Dadcore is simply described as things dads wear. Dadcore is coming back on the scene in part from movies with older movie stars like Liam Nesson and Bruce Willis. Seeing this older generation go crazy on the bad guys all while looking masculine and scoring the girl have popularized dadcore. Light wash jeans, shorter shorts, and New Balance fall into dadcore amongst a variety of others. Usually these clothing choices are ugly by itself and beautiful when paired correctly. Alright, enough about dadcore and onto the reason you’re reading: Are Birkenstocks cool?

The verdict: A courageous “yes.” If you’ve just started trying to dress better, don’t even think about trying them. I usually tell folks to stay away from sandals if you’re new at caring how you look and go with the safe option of boat shoes. Maybe you’re bored with white sneakers or Sperry’s and want to get adventurous. Well then, Birkenstock’s Arizona or Boston models are for you. Arizona has the classic double strap with metal clasps, giving your feet plenty of air if it gets too hot. The Boston model is less conventional and is more of a clog. My favorite is to wear them with wool socks. As an added bonus, they will be some of the most comfortable footwear you will ever have the pleasure of wearing. Dads are known for their laid back, casual style with comfort at the highest priority, so take a page from their book and get comfy.

Who wears short shorts? I wear short shorts! This is an example of a typical conversation in the summer when I’m wearing my shorts that are about two inches above my knee. I like to follow the rule of thirds in my choices of attire. For those unaware, it’s a principle used while composing visual images that split up the canvas into thirds. The rule is said to create more energy and interest when used correctly. Who’s to say we can’t use it when creating an image for ourselves?

The reason I mention this rule is to apply to my short’s length; my first third is my shoes, second third is my bare legs, and the final third is my shorts. Shorts that are too long make you look shorter because the thirds are at an imbalance. Anything past your knee is generally too long. Shorts that are too short, well, you better have Victoria Secret model legs if you’re wearing shorts too short.

Maybe you don’t like showing that much leg or don’t feel comfortable in shorts that end above the knee. For the everyday man, 11” shorts hit right in the middle of the knee or slightly above are perfectly acceptable. I generally reserve this for the people just starting in the fashion game or older men where it is less acceptable to be extreme in clothing choices.

The 7” shorts usually fall in the two inch above the knee category. Reserved for the people who are comfortable with their body and know what looks good. Don’t be shocked if you get people wondering why you’re wearing short shorts. You’re not; they’re just jealous they don’t have the muchachos to pull them off.

Yeah, I squat bro! Ah, the infamous 5” shorts. Reserved for the people with muscular legs or the risk takers. I don’t recommend them, but if you can pull them off, kudos. You really have to be comfortable with your body to wear these.

As with most of my articles, don’t take these tips as rules, take them as recommendations. Height is dependent on how the shorts will fit you. If you’re a 6’6” guy, the 11” shorts will probably fit like the 7” and if you’re 5’4” the 7” will fit like the 11”. Go experiment and find out what looks good on you.

Perhaps some of the most controversial patterns that can be placed on a shirt, without an offensive saying or image, is floral. Gender norms prohibit men from experimenting with different patterns or colors because it is looked at as “girly” or “homosexual.” Terms typically associated with the diminishing of manhood in society, but that is a topic for another day. Floral shirts are seeing a resurgence in a large number of design houses and department stores this Spring/Summer ’14.

How can you pull off a floral shirt? First, get rid of any preconceived notions. Wearing a specific pattern of shirt has no bearing on your character or sexuality (for the record I am very supportive of the lgbt community). To wear a shirt with a floral patterns requires confidence: walk with your head held high, accept compliments with a smile, and shrug off any ill comments.

There is a difference between a Hawaiian shirt and a floral shirt. I typically associate a Hawaiian shirt with a wide collar, strange lapels, and ill-fitting. A floral shirt can either contain a subtle floral pattern with tiny flowers scattered throughout or large flowers, often vibrant with color.

Slim fitting seems to be the most aesthetically pleasing because there is less of the pattern. What I mean by this, and no disrespect to larger guys, is that a XXL shirt is a very large area for a pattern, often making it distracting and difficult to focus attention. The sleeves should reach no further than the end of your bicep; my personal preference is around the middle of the bicep. As with all button downs or collared shirts, the general rule for the hem length is to be no longer than your crotch. Ideally, middle of your zipper is the sweet spot.

The main issue with picking out floral shirts is the pattern. I have the mum print shirt from Dana Lee and while it is a little expensive, I love the mum pattern and construction; I haven’t seen anything else that comes close to it. Uniqlo had an array of floral shirts last Spring/Summer that were affordable with patterns I have yet seen to be duplicated. At this moment, there hasn’t been any sign of a revival of those patterns. J.Crew has a few as well as Topman. However, I don’t recommend Topman for purchases outside of cool patterned clothing.

For men out there still not convinced these shirts aren’t “manly” because they have flowers on them, I invite you to think about this: I’m sure you have given a women in your life flowers at some point in time. Think of this as you giving yourself, a giant floral man, as a gift. As cheesy as it sounds, I think it could work.

Let’s face it; a man is nothing without his hair. We often take it for granted, until one day we realize it is gone, leaving us to question, “what now?” Between those moments, men must care for their hair. But fear not, I am here to offer a few tips I have learned over the years that I use every day to keep me looking fresh and clean.

Shampooing: I’m not going to beat around the bush—I rarely shampoo my hair. I’m a firm believer in the No-Poo lifestyle. Shampoo strips your follicles of important oils and minerals thanks to the chemical sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate. These products are damaging to hair’s health, however most will just notice irritation of the skin and dryness of the applied areas. No-Poo allows sebum, the natural oils produced by skin to keep skin and hair healthy, to build up and fortify the follicles. Instead of using shampoo, I rinse under lukewarm water and massage my scalp with my fingertips. When I’ve massaged for around a minute or two, I take a comb and run it through my hair a few times. It’s that simple. Within a few weeks, you will notice your hair will be thicker and require less product to keep it in place. In the winter when my scalp is a little dry and dandruff is running rampant, I use my Head and Shoulders Anti-Dandruff shampoo just once every two weeks.

Styling: My product line of choice is American Crew. My routine is applying American Crew Forming Cream through my hair, which I just towel dry out of the shower, and letting the product dry. I proceed to use small amounts of the American Crew Pomade to give my hair shine until I’m content. For application, I take my pointer finger to get a dime-sized dollop. I take the little bit and move it on my other finger tips and run it back and forth through my hair. I do this for both the Forming Cream and Pomade. For shorter hair, American Crew Fiber has a nice high hold, opposed to the Pomade and Fiber with a medium hold. My recommendation is to find someone that has similar hair and ask them what product they use. Trust me, they will take it as a compliment, I know I do. If this approach doesn’t suit you, split a container of product with a friend and evaluate which one is better for each person. It took me around two years of experimenting to find the perfect combination that suits my hair, so give it time and experiment with different products; remember everyone’s hair is unique.

If you are worried about thinning hair and would like to regain your crowning glory and avoid going bald before you are ready. There are many opinions available for men when it comes to hair transplant surgery. Choosing this option to regain a full head of hair can help you to boost your confidence and continue experimenting with your style for many years to come.

Finding your own style is such a simple concept, yet probably one of the hardest things to achieve if you are fashion conscious. Please don’t take this as the end all be all to finding out what you like to wear because there are unlimited possibilities to discover and explore fashion. Leave all of your preconceived notions at the door. Finding more about yourself requires an open mind and any hang-ups about a certain style will inhibit you from reaching your fashion destination.

Experiment. This is by far the most expensive way, but you’ll never learn without trying. Find a good store with a reputable return policy and if you see something that strikes your fancy and fits into your budget, go for it. Its fun to go from business casual to goth ninja to Americana. Don’t immediately put off a certain style without trying it because it may be the coolest thing since sliced bread. There is never a dull moment when experimenting and after all, fashion is supposed to be fun.

Browse. Go into stores and feel the fabrics. It sounds a little weird and you might look ridiculous feeling up clothing, but it will give you a grasp of how the piece of clothing will lay on your body. This will give you a leg up shopping online, instead of questioning what oxford cloth feels like you will know. Fashion forums are an excellent source for exposure to fashion—serving as a guide towards your fashion nirvana. I got my start on Reddit’s /r/malefashionadvice and I highly recommend it for beginners (they also have a section for developing your own personal style). Other such outlets for fashion are styleforum.net, superfuture.com, and askandyaboutclothes.com; however, these sites tend be less accepting of beginners.

Patience. When I first started caring about what I wore I bought so many clothes that I thought were cool, only to realize two months later that I’m never going to wear them again. Start slow and pace yourself. The rise of fast fashion has made finding your style ten times easier. If you have ever been in an H&M, you’d be surprised how inexpensive some of the clothing is. Now, you get what you pay for, but it is easy to buy a piece and decide whether you love it or hate it at a small price.

Confidence. People will notice that you’re changing what you wear. Some might compliment you, some might make homophobic slurs. Be confident in what you are wearing and be proud that you’re learning something about your clothing desires. You owe it to yourself to look good, and no one else.

Perception. This point makes the confidence part sound invalid—but used correctly—I think it plays a major role in finding yourself. Perception is how you want others to view you. So, if you want people to take you seriously at a business meeting, wear a suit. If you want to look like you’re going to the gym, you wear athletic shorts and an old t-shirt. The point is to consider using clothing as an extension of your personality.

The exploration of oneself should be fun; it should be a journey that will take as long as it needs to. Even if you do find what you truly love, never stop growing. Continue to experiment with higher quality goods or maybe even take a chance on a random Kickstarter campaign. At the end of the day though, its just clothes.

In the quest for versatility, the Oxford cloth button down (OCBD by fashion communities) is as versatile as it comes. The OCBD originated from the menswear powerhouse Brooks Brothers when one of the grandsons saw the practical uses for the shirt when watching a game of polo. He sent the designs to a founder of Brooks Brothers, who instantly fell in love with the idea. The shirts were first made purely for sport because of the stability of the collar in combination with the casual appeal of the design but over the years the designs have modernized, disappointing original consumers of the shirt.

Small designs – like the collar roll – captivate fashion enthusiasts. The collar started out as a full roll, giving the look of volume and signaling superior construction. Present day collars have a very small roll, or god forbid, lay flat with no roll at all. While all OCBDs are made from oxford cloth, the cloth can differ in stiffness and weight. Obviously, a lighter-weight and less dense oxford weave is ideal for summer, where a thick weave that is a little stiff points toward cooler weather. I have a preference for a stiff cloth because I like the way the fabric creases on the arms.

The best part about Oxfords? Little to no maintenance! OCBDs are traditionally a casual shirt allowing the wearer to throw them on straight out of the dryer. I prefer mine a little wrinkled; however, if you left them on your floor, 1), get a better method of storing clothing, and 2), iron out the major wrinkles. Just like any other button down or piece of clothing, put the occasional detergent stick on stains. And if the shirt is white, remember to hit near the neck and cuffs because of dirt build-up. I tend to wait three to four wears (my white OCBD is usually two) before washing because with an undershirt, the cloth takes longer to to truly dirty.

I have been searching for two years for the perfect Oxford button down that fits me off the rack and have yet to find one. My favorite one that is well constructed and fits a reasonable budget is from Uniqlo. It has a slim silhouette and a low price point, making it ideal for students or beginners. Meanwhile, Brooks Brothers has been doing OCBDs longer than anyone, giving them the time to perfect the design. If you want the best and money is no object, start there. My only holdout with the Brooks’ Oxford is they took out the extra-slim fit. To hit the middle road, you can’t go wrong with J.Crew. Make sure you look for sales because they aren’t worth the retail price.

It’s hard to find something that doesn’t go with an Oxford cloth button down. Maybe sweatpants? Even then I think it can be done. With a full suit, I would be careful of the OCBD making it look too casual. But as with all things style, it’s all about experimentation and finding out what works for you.

My suggestion is to play around to find what shirt fits your style when seeking out that perfect Oxford. Want a nice collar roll for your new job? Go with Brooks Brothers. Want something to get you through school? Go with Uniqlo. No matter the time frame though, every man should own at least one Oxford cloth button down..

Simple. Versatile. Rugged. The chore coat is a staple for the working man and it is quickly making a resurgence in men’s fashion. They are a piece of the American fabric, a coat of heritage if you will. The naming of the coat is self-explanatory: men needed extra space for easy access to tools, a spot to hold papers, or staying warm on those chilly early mornings. They needed a coat for chores. Throughout the years, as with all Americana pieces, the chore coat rose to the masses through movies and large brands like the very popular work-wear brand Carhartt, placing the chore coat among the good company of barn coats and field coats.

Chore coats are among my favorite pieces for cooler weather, similar to what you’d see in early spring and mid to late fall. Currently, I’ve been wearing my Apolis Indigo Wool Chore Jacket. What I love about it is the ability for the coat to grow with me as the indigo dye bleeda from the coat. The coat is a bit pricey, but the quality is impeccable from the vintage buffalo buttons to the hidden pocket on the right breast. For those budget conscious or those that just can’t justify paying that much for a piece of clothing, Pointer Brand has been consistently producing quality chore coats since 1913. As an added bonus, their chore coats are made in America, securing the American heritage atmosphere.

Styling chore coats are simple, which is perhaps the reason I love them so much. For a casual weekend, throw the coat on with a pair of jeans. For you office junkies, pair with your favorite chinos (colloquially known as khakis). A flannel or button-up are perfectly acceptable or for those late summer night grocery (alcohol) runs, a t-shirt can work just as well.

One option you can use is wool tshirts which never fail to disappoint for comfort and style, especially when mixed with a coat such as a chore coat. Not only that but they can be used in many different ways, with a versatility that is unmatched. Not only great for style, but they are also wicking and protect you from UV rays which can be harmful too. The chore coat with a simple tee combination can be a winner all round and something you will enjoy as a staple in your wardrobe for years to come.

Chore coats have a little something to offer for everyone. Add some versatility to your wardrobe – bring on a piece that you will wear for years, that your grandfather wore for years, and one day maybe your kids or grandkids will wear for years. Whether you’re a manly man looking for a space for tools or an urbanite seeking a piece to start an outerwear collection, the chore coat will be right for you.
