The concept stretches just over six inches longer than the CT6, the company’s current flagship, leading us to believe this may be Cadillac’s answer to the Teutonic luxury competition currently dominating the niche — the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series, and Mercedes S-Class.

Although maintaining a predominately angular design language, the silhouette has been softened to create a more finessed form. Sweeping, yet still angular chromed vents aft of the front wheels correlate with massive front scoops below the grille, and all the elements work together with accents at the back of the massive windows to visually stretch the vehicle. While the front lights unmistakably draw from the current generation Camaro, they balance aggression with elegance in a minimalist and understated way.

The name Escala might draw from the existing luxury SUV Escalade model, yet it’s also meant to be suggestive of the nature of the car and its position as Cadillac’s luxury flagship. The concept is powered by a 4.2-liter twin-turbo engine, designed for cylinder deactivation to reduce the consumption of the V-8.

Stunning screens make use of relatively new OLED technology, making for a familiar, yet modernized, interior which should be comfortable to the existing Cadillac customer, yet engaging and contemporary enough to attract new buyers. Buyers like you and me.

We recently had a conversation with Ergonofis Co-founder, Sam Finn. Ergonofis is a Canadian startup that crafts beautiful standing desk work spaces designed to keep you healthy and moving throughout your day. As Co-founder Sam Finn elegantly puts it, “Our mission is quite simple: we want to help people enjoy their workdays and, ultimately, inspire them to move a little more every day. Making a difference in people’s lives is what truly matters to us and what drives us to keep innovating. We’re not in the desk business – we’re in the mouvement business”

F24: “Thanks for taking the time to talk with us, Sam. Can you tell us a little bit about what first sparked the idea for Ergonofis?”

Sam: “Yeah definitely! It was quite a long process but It started when I was roughly 21 years old. When I was 21 I launched an online personal fitness training business and had to use car tires to build a desk that I could stand at. When I did that, two things happened: I realized that standing all day isn’t necessarily better, and I realized that my clients were willing to kill themselves in the gym, but were careless about the way they spent their day at the office. I knew the dangers of sitting for prolonged periods of time, and thought “why can’t we apply a more preventative approach, rather than just treating the symptoms in the gym?”And that’s when it hit me, and I decided to build Ergonofis: I prefer, fundamentally, to go a bit deeper than the often superficial motives for exercising I observed as a trainer in the industry. I felt I could have a more direct impact on actual health and wellness if I chose to stop doing the online training service and focus on Ergonofis. I could have a much bigger impact if I focused on where we spend so much of our lives – at work.”

Here’s what happens to your body when you sit for most of the day
(6 or plus hours)

F24: “What does the the unique process of making a desk look like at Ergonofis?”

Sam: “My partner, Kimberley, focuses mostly on the industrial design aspect, and I focus on designing manufacturing processes that align with our vision of building beautiful, ecologically conscious products. In terms of both design and manufacturing, we have unique differentiating traits from competitors; the wood we use, the quality we deliver, and how we structure our business.

It depends on the model, but for, say… the walnut slab, for any of our higher end products, we apply a custom process where we source the wood together with the client to find just the right slab tailored to their aesthetic preferences. We then move it to our nearby production center and begin to work on the wood with unique treatments and varnishes that minimize ecological impact, but without sacrificing quality. Our tops are the least transformed products available because we use solid wood. This also means that our desks are much more durable than traditional veneered wood or laminate tops. Wood is a traditional renewable resource but in order to minimize the ecological impact we have, we only source our wood locally, significantly cutting emissions by eliminating transit of exotic woods. We plant 3 trees for every desk that we sell; again to be aware of the impact we are having on our immediate environment.

Inlaying the digital interface elegantly was something we hadn’t seen in the market, and so we developed a unique process that was surprisingly challenging to perfect and really really get right every time: conditioning the wood to move with the inlaid touchscreen, rather than warp over time – the slot for the display needs to be durable to move with the wood without damaging as it expands with changing temperatures and humidity. ”

F24: “Will you use more woods in the future?”

Sam: “It really comes down to our environment – we really only use local woods and pride ourselves on this detail. We focus on walnut, maple-wood, cherry-wood, and ash because they can be sourced nearby, but also fit our design standards well…the walnut is definitely our best seller though!”

F24: “Whats in store for the future at Ergonofis – what cool new products are coming next!”

Sam — “As we grow we consistently reinvest in our product offering and further refine and deliver top tier quality for our customers. One product we are currently working towards launching is a smaller version of the ‘Sway‘ model – mostly for people in an urban environment working from home with a laptop. Keep an eye our for that!”

F24: “Here are FactoryTwoFour, we explore “the original lifestyle.” What does ‘living the original lifestyle’ mean to you? ”

Sam: “Thats a great question. I’d say that living the original lifestyle, first of all having the courage to be who you truly are and not what society wants you to be or not what you want to look like on Instagram. I think that’s step one. For me personally its about building stuff, together with other people, and to keep fighting when everyone expects you to quit, and learning as much as I can while I’m still breathing. If I can keep doing that, them I’m original by my standards.”

Although in the past, I haven’t been the biggest fan of Skullcandy products, its difficult to find as much value in the wireless earbud space with $49.99 as with their products, so I took the chance. And I chose poorly.

Admittedly, after about four weeks of usage, I’m happier with these than with any other Skullcandy product I’ve tried – mostly because they usually break by now. The around-the-neck collar make the Ink’d a perfect option for wearing while exercising. Not only can volume and song controls be accessed with the large buttons on the collar, but the collar reduces the likelihood the buds will fall out of your ears while running and sweating, a problem I’ve encountered with $100+ Beats in the past. The battery life lasts roughly 8 hours, though this figure is a liberal estimate, and depends strongly on volume and if the headset is being used for calls at all (I can only speak well of the microphone, it performed very well while both exercising and driving)

The largest grievance I have with these is the claimed “30 feet of chord-free Bluetooth” which blatantly isn’t true – three feet is a more accurate promise. I found that if my device was in my pocket, then there weren’t any issues. But as soon as distance exceeded my roughly four feet, playback would become choppy and anxiety inducing. Not so brilliant for working out, as you can’t really hop on the bench press and put your phone next on you.

I chose this product primarily for use on my motorcycle, as the large, collar mounted buttons allow for quick song and volume access, and for exercising in. In both these categories, the product performs well, and few others offer the same value in relation to the cost. The Skullcandy Ink’d Wireless are a budget option and perform well in the circumstances, but you can do far better for your dollar in this competitive field.

Written by Ethan Vosburgh

Everyone begins their year with some sort of “resolution” and this year I wanted to successfully run a half marathon; a daunting task for someone like myself, who doesn’t have the super skinny runner’s build, and typically likes to stick to the weight-room and an occasional weekend soccer game in the park. After the many training miles, blisters, and mental preparation to keep myself going, I successfully finished my first half marathon with a sub 1:50:00 time. Now, for you as the reader, it’s easy to make the excuse “oh I have X knee injury, or X problem keeping me from reaching this goal” — you can overcome this barrier, like I did. In the past I have suffered from hip issues, specifically sciatica, which in the end made me focus more in the gym, especially following high school.

As of now, I weigh 182 lbs and hit the weights about three times more than I go running — and let’s be honest, that is not exactly a successful formula for running. Even so, after some healthy smack talk from my dad and my good friend Christian, who also just finished his first half marathon to celebrate recovering from an ACL surgery, they had me motivated to beat the both of them.

From the start, my dad was a valuable source for tips on how I should train and what to expect come race day. The biggest thing he and Christian both said was that no matter what my best training time was going to be, comparatively I would run better on race day, no matter what! Whether or not there was a mixture of proper rest, a lot of adrenaline, and great execution of my training plan, they were right — I managed close to 4 minutes better than my best time previously. If I am being honest my biggest barrier to finishing was training myself mentally and physically to be able to run 13.1 miles. And not only that but to do it in a time comparable to my father and Christian (spoiler, I beat them both).

Generally on race day, for all you prospective runners, understand that if your start time is at 7 you will have to be awake around 3 am. Because the longer the competition, the earlier the start time tends to be, which is to protect you from running in the heat — any of you ever try running in 90+ degree weather? This includes driving to the bus pickup location, riding the bus to the start line, and then “patiently” waiting for the race to begin. Now the night before the race, I felt such a pressing mix of anxiety and excitement, that I didn’t really sleep more than 3 hours total because my mind basically told Mr. Sandman to jog on. After tossing and turning some more, I finally decided to get up and get my bowels going with a nice tall cuppa joe — the anxiety and excitement alone gave me enough issues to deal with, I wasn’t going to let having to poop mid-race ruin my time.

Once on the bus, everything became very surreal. I could feel an energy from everyone else on the bus fueling the that sensation. This only increased as we sat and waited as the bus filled completely and began the drive at which point a flash of panic hit me like a suckerpunch. I began wondering how capable I was, questioning my training, how much is this rain going to affect me? A nervous chatter began on the bus as multiple people began talking about their feelings about this being their first race — just hearing others confirm their fears helped to quell mine. By the time the bus hit the canyon everyone was dialed in and ready to push each other to and through the finish line. Our feelings of excitement only grew and as our bus pulled up to the start line everyone began cheering, I mean everyone was hyped up — I don’t know about the rest of the people on the bus but I felt like a damn superhero!

As time ticked closer and closer to the race start, my adrenaline was pumping. At 1 minute to start, time truly slowed down for me. I could feel each individual drop of rain hitting my arms, I could hear the gravel crunch under crowd of shifting feet. Now when I say you could feel the anticipation amongst the crowd of runners, this was a physical sensation. Similar to the saying: when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object — something’s gotta give. With 30 seconds to start I noticed the announcers had begun playing “The Eye of the Tiger” — I will rise up to the challenge of my rivals! 15 seconds left me slightly stunned as the chant of the countdown pierced through the music. At 10 seconds I felt the crowd rhythmically pulsating forward and back wistfully waiting for the starter gun. With 5 seconds left it felt as if time slowed almost to a stop, all the energy and sound around me was muffled. I remember looking at the clock and seeing the fractions of a second ticking away. 3 seconds left. I felt like someone turned the volume back on to my life — honestly it was an explosion of sound. 2 seconds. Glancing around, seeing the determination in everyone else, I knew it was time. 1 second.. This was it, time is up, no more bullshit. I am committed. And I will give this everything I’ve got. Let’s go baby.

On August 19th 2016, Mercedes-Benz presented its much anticipated concept iteration of the Maybach brand at Pebble Beach Concourse d’Elegance in California — the exquisite Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6.

The 2+2 coupe totaled nearly 20ft in length, and boasted everything from gull wing doors reminiscent of the iconic 1954 300 SL, to a claimed 738-horsepower electric monstrosity under the massive hood. Swooping yet minimal lines run the length of the body draw inspiration from nautical design language, incorporating classic Mercedes-Benz profiles of old to create an absolutely stunning form.

“With its intelligent appeal and reduced, technoid look, it perfectly embodies our design philosophy of sensual purity and our pursuit of aerodynamic efficiency,” said Gorden Wagener, head of design for Daimler AG in a press release.

The vehicle looked slick and slippery, and this desire for aerodynamic efficiency was likely both an aesthetic and functional choice, as a reduction in wind-resistance correlates with improved travel range of the electric power-train. Interestingly, although the interior extensively utilized screens, both for vehicle information and to augment up to 50% of the windshield with geographic and misc. data read outs, there has been no mention of the vehicle featuring autonomous functionality.

Although Mercedes-Benz has been quite secretive regarding possible production of the vehicle, and currently maintains the vehicle is just a concept, we firmly believe it would sure give the Rolls-Royce Wraith a run for its money – let’s see what unfolds when the Mercedes-Maybach makes its debut, if ever.

F24 recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Ian Broekman (IG: @ian_broekman), a transportation design Junior at Lawrence Technical College and Chief Design Officer at Mil-Spec Automotive, the company behind the newly reimagined and modernized Mil-Spec Launch Edition HMMWV H1. The Mil-Spec H1 is the fastest, most drive-able, and most affordable H1 in the world:

F24: Thank you for taking the time to sit down with us, Ian, we’ve been hooked on your design work for a while, and think the Mil-Spec Launch Edition Humvee is pretty much the coolest 4×4 we’ve seen in a minute — but we’ll get into that later. So tell us, what sparked your interest in cars and automotive design?

IB: Thanks for having me! Well, my dad always used to draw and as a kid, I used to doodle like every artistic kid, so I always liked creating — drawing in particular. Actually, my godfather was a designer at Cadillac in the early 2000s, so I got pretty into that scene early and was able to observe someone in my life actually doing it. Growing up here in Detroit it’s hard to not surround yourself with automotive culture, so those two paths of my life merged and before I knew it, I was drawing cars every single day in my sketchbook. Then it kind of snowballed, it seemed really natural to me. So why not combine my two favorite things — creative expression and cars?

A lot of my family lives overseas. When I was in grade school visiting my Aunt, I made this desperate plea to my dad to drive from Germany to Southern Italy and back, and look at all the most famous automotive landmarks — so we drove to Rome and visited Lamborghini, Ferrari and traveled through the stunning countryside and beautiful roads. In Germany, we went to the Nurburgring, visited Porsche, and also Mercedes in Stuttgart. I think seeing this at such a young age with my dad, and learning the emotion behind each brand, the vehicles, the personas and histories of each, their integration in the culture, was really exciting for me. Driving the entire way, and not being in an airplane, really made a difference. Being able to experience the landscape, the haptic and sensory details of driving — that was the most influential experience of my life. I think this experience also made the importance of travel and fresh perspectives clear to me, and is a key reason why I consistently and consciously switch up where I sketch and work today.

F24: Do you ever get ‘sketcher’s block?’ And what do you do about it?

IB: I think every creative encounters creative blocks, regardless of field, but I think that’s a reason why I switch up where I sketch and my surroundings and influences as much as possible. That’s where looking at other fields is really refreshing — a lot of designers in the automotive field tend to fall in love with the romance of cars and it creates an echo chamber with few new ideas. When you’re just looking at cars 24/7, it can get old.

When I get stuck, I look at it as an opportunity to learn something new, and interestingly, often produce some of my best work immediately after one of these blocks.

F24: How much of your process is analog vs digital? And do you think the process of sketching analog will go away as digital tools become better and more intuitive?

IB: This is going to sound pretty stereotypical but. It always starts with a sketch. This is something I believe very strongly, and conveying the emotional aspect through drawing on a piece of paper is very unique, even though digital tools help brings ideas to life.

I think as technology evolves, it will continue to be beneficial for bring a sketch to life or refining a form, but I think everyone has to learn the mechanics of drawing by hand first… there’s no doubt about it. It’s the fastest way to articulate an idea. Especially in meetings, you always have a pen and paper, you don’t always have a Photoshop window open with the file up to modify and demonstrate when discussing a project. Having the technical skill to “show” with just your hand, a pencil, and paper will never lose value professionally or creatively.

F24: Where do you look for inspiration? Who or what designers do you look to?

IB: I don’t look to particular automotive designers per se, even though there are incredible designers that produce really stunning and creative work. I look to draw from other fields. So I look more to architecture, fashion, and pretty much anything — besides cars — that broadens my design perspective.
I like to draw from other fields and then just see, you know, ‘how can I apply a different mentality or perspective to the current project,’ regardless if that’s professional, education, or a personal project.

Right now at MSA I’m looking to lifestyle a lot right now — like streetwear, fashion — and see how they approach different kinds of seasons, position themselves as streetwear, outdoor wear, etc.

F24: What’s your all time favorite car? Which car inspires you the most?

IB: The Porsche 911. It’s a common answer now-a-days, but my grandfather had a 1972 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS lightweight. My dad used to tell me stories about them storming the autobahn, and as a kid I would see photos of them in these linen ’70s suits driving this 911, so It sparked this emotional connection with me when I was six or seven years old. It’s my favorite car. There’s nothing else like it. I’ve driven a few, both the new and old ones, and it’s still just my favorite car I’ve ever driven. Just the experience and connection to the vehicle make it the best.

Recently I had the opportunity to drive the new 991 911 GT3 RS on some backroads together with a friend in a Ferrari 458, in Mexico at legal speeds on a closed course, of course. It was probably the most fun I’ve ever had in a car; the sounds and the handling were just out of this world. As I was driving, I thought about how my grandfather must’ve felt driving his back in the ’70s — it was an incredible experience.

F24: How did you get started at Mil-Spec? Where did the idea come from?

IB: From a design perspective, Mil-Spec utilizes US government military hardware that’s just rotting and sitting in fields. And so what we thought was ‘how can we give these trucks new life? How can we modernize them and make them a functional, streetable vehicle today that competes with other contemporary off road vehicles?’ Originally they were built for low-end torque with not a lot of power and usability, and so we took this great platform and decided to find the best components and powertrain for the HMMWV to compliment this platform and create the reality of a more streetable vehicle.

We drop in a 6.6 Liter Duramax Diesel engine that produces 500 hp and 1000ft/lbs of torque. This is mated to a six-Speed Allison transmission, and it wouldn’t be complete without a 2High-4High-4Low transfer case and locking differential in the front and rear.

We spent roughly two years fine tuning, researching, developing, and finding solutions for just this vehicle. We are really putting out a great powerplant with the engine, a pretty balanced power to weight ratio that handles well in dirt, sand dunes, snow, and the street.
The few times we’ve been out with test vehicles, we always get compliments and questions, and it’s nice to give people a different perspective on what the H1 can do, not just crawling up walls but actually being able to drive it.

Right now, we are about two months away from delivering our first production vehicles and work on an inventory basis. Your suburban, your Chevy Tahoe is getting conservatively 15 miles to the gallon combined. I mean, our H1 delivers 17 — with aggressive driving. The weight of the H1 is often misconceived, it’s mostly aluminum, so often it’s much lighter than it looks. I think H1s get a bad image and are seen as a poster child for inefficiency, so we are also looking to explore alternative ways of presenting this vehicle, and looking to alternate propulsion options within the next couple years. As we go forward, changing the image of the H1 will be a key focus. In the end, it’s about having fun and creating a product that actually performs.

F24: Do you follow key design principles? We recently had the pleasure of speaking with the founder of Fisker Automotive, and he articulated some core principles he follows.

IB: I definitely think there are inherent principles to design, similar to what Mr. Fisker articulated — general volumes and forms and proportions are critical, but for me it depends on the project I’m working on. For example, I worked on an RX7 bodykit where there was a very sculptural process, but with MSA, the trucks are quite different, they’re very much over the top, but also function oriented. I think its important to keep in mind, ‘What is the legacy or heritage of the brand or vehicle, and how can you push that to somewhere new?’ So I try to stay mindful of where things has been, and how can you build off that and make it different.

F24: And finally, here at FactoryTwoFour our goal is to ‘live the original lifestyle.’ What does living the original lifestyle mean to you?

IB: I think that’s a really important question; more so now than ever before. Especially in this segment, designers often follow trends to be marketable, and go whatever way the wind is blowing. If you really like something and it means a lot to you, you should pursue it. Trying to find new avenues, and trying things differently, trying to be your own person; having the courage to try new things and not to be somebody else. That’s what pushes me to move forward as a person and designer.

Nowadays, I can see a trend where people are afraid to be themselves. A lot of people say ‘be your own person,’ but a lot of people do something because it’s the hot thing to do right now, or because they think someone else thinks they should be doing it. They don’t take the time to find their niche.

Welcome to our [LIFE]Style Makers series, where we meet with those making big impressions on the everyday life.

In my first encounter with Jerami Goodwin, aka STAINO aka @seanpenncils, it was clear what kind of artist he was — immensely prolific, always creating.

“You could even say graffiti is the most powerful art, because of what it might take to create the piece. Most artists have a canvas and work in the comfort of their studio. When you’re scaling a building, or you only have 45 seconds to paint on a truck, it results in an alternative mindset and unique artwork that can only exist under that sort of pressure and those circumstances.”

Upon arrival at his classic Bowery walk-up in a perfectly patinaed building, I was shown into a massive white studio stretching both directions. There’s a luminescent table at one end, and of course, a few stylish gents hunched over computers. As I neared the end of my trek from the door to the table, I was greeted by an outstretched hand, a grinning face and an enthusiastic “Hey man, I’m Jerami, nice to meet you — lemme show you around!”

Goodwin is originally from Atlanta, GA, “the strip club capital of America” he noted with a chuckle. He moved to NYC nearly ten years ago, making a name for himself as a street artist, tattoo artist, skater, and occasional break dancer.

“The culture really just attracted me, there’s so much. And with graffiti art, it’s so interactive and just adds to the experience of when you come to New York City. You could even say graffiti is the most powerful art, because of what it might take to create the piece. Most artists have a canvas and work in the comfort of their studio. When you’re scaling a building, or you only have 45 seconds to paint on a truck, it results in an alternative mindset and unique artwork that can only exist under that sort of pressure and those circumstances. I’d even argue because of the illegality it’s one of the most emotionally engaging art forms.”

Today, Goodwin and his team are working on a t-shirt graphic titled, THE SOHO SKI TEAM for his Player’s Club apparel line. The joke of course being, that there are no white mountains of snow in SoHo. Well, at least not the kind you can ski on.

While the idea was conceptualized earlier today, they’ve already lined up a meeting with a local artist and a screen-printer to get the first couple samples tomorrow.

The imagery draws from a retro late ’80s logo, and although it feels familiar, there’s something contemporary and modernized about it, like a future interpretation of retro. And it works.

As Goodwin explains, “I show graffiti and street art, but I don’t like to call the work we display ‘street art’ We’re classically trained artists, skateboarders, photographers, and sculptors. [During an exhibit] This studio becomes an artwork and display of culture, in and of its self whenever there’s a show, and my aim is to create a space to enable and connect creatives — my gallery is a destination.”

After showing me around the space, we head around the corner to a Thai place with Jerami’s friend, Brazilian artist Pixote to talk in more detail about the gallery:

CW: Tell me about your last show?

JG: Last collection was a 40 artist group show, at my gallery, none of the work was for sale, and I’d describe it as more of a display. A statement of what I think is collectible, and the artists I’ve chosen to represent. I mean, we talked about it earlier, but I choose what artworks participate in the show based on the art. This might seem like, ‘duh’ but what I mean is that with many [of the artists] it’s just about the art. Some I may not be in touch with anymore, but it’s about the art and an expression of my eye. I’m showcasing my eye, as a curator and collector.

CW: What are you working on and exploring right now?

JG: Looking to the future. Fashion is art, and it’s another avenue I want to explore. Texture and construction are really cool to me. I like making beautiful things, be it create a new brand, web content, figure out how to market it, or make a limited line of custom gallery apparel pieces. Right now, I’ve got limited-edition gallery prints, and gallery apparel from the most recent show for sale, you can check out my IG — @seanpenncils — for more. I also do modeling, not that I’m a model, but I was chosen to be one of the five artists in the new Band of Outsiders campaign. It’s just another avenue of expression and creative collaboration. The brand has recently relaunched under new creative direction, and I was chosen as one of five artists to be the face of this relaunch. It’s really new to me, and it’s really cool to contribute and surround yourself with such a talented group.

CW: When are upcoming shows, and what can we expect?

JG: My next showcase is on February 3rd ( at 99 Bowery) of my friend Daniel Weiss’ photographs. The debut solo show titled “New York Photographs” will show 26 of Daniel’s most iconic photographs taken in the city. Regarding what you can expect for the future of the gallery? You can expect to find artists who are young, some who are old, some known, some not known, and everything in between. Some artists how have been involved with the gallery include Ricky Powell, Retna, COST, to name a few. They’re all key players in the scene locally, but I showcase just as many artists who haven’t hung much work before. The layout of the gallery, coming back to our earlier conversation, transcends all kinds of art forms. The show itself becomes an experience to engage with as both an artwork and lifestyle, and I’m stoked to play with and layer in the medium of photography.

CW: What do you wish you had known five years ago. What would you tell a younger version of yourself?

JG: That’s a hard one! I don’t really have too many regrets… Because I wouldn’t be who I am now and be able to create the work I do without those experiences. I would tell them to do the right thing. Just try to do the right thing. Don’t let people’s malpractice influence you. Its like I was saying earlier about showing some artists’ work, even though I don’t really interact with them, due to bad experiences in the past. A lotta times I got fucked over on a 5k commission. I’m not gonna cry about it, but that’s not the world I want to live in. So just be aware of the role people play in your life, be it to show you how to treat people, or how not to treat people.

CW: What does “living the original lifestyle” mean to you?

JG: The freedom to fearlessly create, on my own terms, and getting off on manifesting that.

Jerami Goodwin’s next show will be at 99 Bowery in New York City

The Matador Daylite16 Backpack is marketed as one of the most packable and ultra-light backpack options currently on the market. After nearly a month of pushing the bag to its limits in New York City, and piling enough Trader Joe’s products into it that a normal backpack would likely have torn, it’s safe to say my next backpack purchase will come from Matador.

Here on the Lower East Side of NYC, space is everything. 500 sq/ft apartments go for $4.4M. A parking spot costs more than rent. So effectively using the little space you have is critical, and the Matador Daylite16 embodies this perfectly. It’s puncture resistant construction and dual-train zipper system has never let me down, regardless of how hard I’m pulling on the zippers in an effort to stuff more groceries in.

http://www.factorytwofour.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/20161031_180826.mp4

The backpack is stored in a tiny drawstring container, like a mini sleeping bag that fits in the palm of your hand. Although this shouldn’t have been a surprise, the bag is impossibly tiny when stored, and way easier to get back into the storage sack than a sleeping bag. It’s really is difficult to capture the scale of the bag.

The last backpack we’ve gotten our hands on is an incredibly sturdy piece. It’s my go-to carry-on bag when traveling, But the sturdiness comes at the price of space. So on day trips, the Matador wins, because I can fit it in my pocket. Similarly, the North St. Bags “21 is another excellent waterproof duffle we’ve used for weekend trips to Park City, UT in the past. It just doesn’t get small enough to make it a practical choice in a place where space is the most valuable commodity.

So if you need a super-compact, ultra-light backpack that’s waterproof, small enough to fit into a pocket, and large enough to grab groceries for the week, this is a backpack for you.

Amazon’s new second-generation Echo Dot is a terrific bundle that offers virtually all the features of the larger Echo, at half the price ($50).

Simply saying “Alexa,” makes the hockey puck-sized Echo Dot ready for action, and it can manage everything from playing music, to answering questions about the weather, to telling a joke, and even hailing an Uber or ordering Dominos hands-free.

“The new far-field microphone system is lifted right out of the larger Echo, and makes the Dot surprisingly good at picking up commands. One of my friends actually set me a 4 a.m. alarm by whispering at Alexa through my window.”

A key difference between the previous-generation Dot, and other Amazon Alexa products, is that the second-generation offers compatibility with an existing sound system, so you can quickly turn your massive system into a smart speaker with a simple aux cord.

The linking and disconnection process from Spotify is easy and straightforward. Friends can quickly link their devices with just a few words, and a new far-field microphone system is a big improvement over the last generation.

It’s lifted right out of the larger Echo, and makes the Dot surprisingly good at picking up commands. One of my friends actually managed to set me an alarm — for 4 a.m. — by whispering at Alexa through my window.

Luckily, you can just yell at the snooze button.

A roommate of mine recently picked one up too, and as we spent an afternoon playing around with them, we both agreed the device was missing one key detail: You can’t sync audio across multiple Dots. This means I couldn’t connect the two in my own household to both play in sync from my Spotify account.

Now, don’t get me wrong, as the device is incredible value for $5o. But without the sync functionality across multiple devices, the Dot loses the opportunity to be a smart home surround system and instead becomes more of a smart alarm clock.

That being said, the library of voice commands is continually growing, and the already impressive capabilities of the Echo Dot will likely continue to improve.

I recently had the opportunity to drive the Tesla Model S 90D, and it totally ruined the car I was about to drive next, the Porsche Macan S.

As someone who has never been in a Tesla, but has broken 200mph on the Autobahn in an SLR, it was still a whole new driving experience. The Tesla redefines the parameters of what an automobile should do and can do, and after an hour in the driver’s seat, even the most decked-out S-Class feels passé and aged.

So, let me walk you through it: the Model-S was on the charger when I got the keys, so step one was disconnecting it from the charger.

Sounds simple (and ultimately, it is), but it took a few attempts to hit the button on the fob at the right time, let the led around the charging port turn to a light blue, then disconnect the charger. All the while, the front and passenger door handles are elegantly revealed, sliding out from the door, and the mirrors fold out into place. I get into the driver’s seat, and already everything feels, looks, and responds in a unique way: the radio gently fades in, the massive digital display in the middle console is illuminated, recognizing the approach with the help of the key, and priming everything for use.

You put your foot on the brake, and that’s it. The car is on.

The digital displays transform into dials and gauges, giving distance readouts of everything around the vehicle, and upon touching the gear selector down into reverse, the massive center console becomes a huge backup camera and the mirrors adjust to improve rear visibility.

Although it seems silly, the car is absolutely silent and completely still. I asked myself “is it on?!” quite a few times, because the vibrations you’re accustomed to with a traditional gasoline engine are missing. We make it out of the driveway and the car lowers itself down, recognizing it has left the residence, preparing for ludicrous speeds.

At this point, I’m still taking it easy, enjoying the minimal yet communicative interior styling, the brushed aluminum forms on the door handle, reminiscent of a wave, or rather, a current (we are in a Tesla after all). The next straightaway, I stomp, and before my foot has depreciated the pedal all the way, we’re already going nearly 70 mph, and my heart is going at least twice that.

Everybody and their mom talks about how fast the Model-S is, but it really is unprecedented for a car of its class. Your face will feel like it’s melting and you get insane butterflies that can only bring a smile to your face. It can be totally comfortable and poised one moment, the way a Lamborghini could only dream of, and the next its passing that same Lamborghini on a straightaway; no comfort lost, and silent all throughout.

After testing the Tesla’s speed, I hit the highway to test the infamous drive-assist (but we all know it should be called autopilot.) Accelerating to highway speeds in under 3 seconds will never get old, but turning on the autopilot feature comes in at a close second. The Tesla senses the cars around you, both in front and to the sides of you; all displayed as grey animated cars on your dashboard.

Lean back, relax, and let the car worry about traffic, but don’t make the mistake of taking your hands off the wheel while you marvel at how far technology has come because the Tesla will sternly reprimand you with an automated “Please keep your hands on the wheel at all times.” I think they are only concerned with the engagement of the driver for liability reasons because while both the car and I were cruising in autopilot a garbage truck merged onto the highway at pedestrian speed. The Tesla sensed the discrepancy and braked hard enough to lock out my seatbelt, saving me and the car from a smelly collision.

After all the adrenaline from too many accelerations and a close call with a moronic waste-mobile, I was ready to head home and lay down. As the owner of the car told me, “if you like roller-coasters you should buy this car. You’ll never need to go to a theme park again.”

This week, we’re getting our Motorcycle Monday Fix by taking a look at Japanese custom motorcycle builder Ronin Motor Works.

I stumbled on this company when I was considering purchasing a Buell, a now defunct nameplate once managed by American icon Harley-Davidson and American racing champion Eric Buell.

“Ronin took the Buell XB to the next level, giving it an unmistakably beefy, yet minimal silhouette and truly unique, road presence.”

I was immediately enraptured with a custom build of the Buell XB, titled the “47.” The Buell XB was already an interesting bike, due to its heritage, design, and atypical engine configuration for sport bike, as it got its motivation from a Harley-Davidson-sourced V-Twin, rather than a more typical inline-four.

But Ronin Motor Works took the Buell’s looks to the already impressive looks to the next level, and gave it an unmistakable and truly unique presence on the road. Its silhouette is simultaneously beefy, yet minimal.

The Japanese custom builder draws inspiration from the 18th century tale of the 47 Ronin, the leaderless samurai who embodied ideals of leadership, loyalty, and sacrifice.

As you might be able to guess from the source of inspiration, Ronin Motor Works is only building 47 bikes total, each unique, with the final two being presented this past week. Each of the two bikes available has a own name, #6 has been dubbed Hazama Mitsukaze, and #7, Kurabayayashi Takeyuki.

Unsurprisingly, the names come courtesy of the men of the 47 Ronin.

For more about Ronin Motor Works, the insane tech they’ve integrated, and the design development of their stunning creations can be found the company’s official site.

I’m gonna just put this out there and get it out of the way: the biggest problem with Tani’s newest line of men’s underwear and undershirts is that your lady-friend(s) will snag ’em so quick, you’ll be lucky if you see them ever again (the underwear, not the lady).

Why you might ask – because of the two questions Tani poses with every design and fabric choice for their garments:

Is it comfortable?/Will it out-perform to create the best men’s underwear?

This has led them to go above and beyond to engineer and design fabrics derived from eucalyptus that are finer than silk (seriously), and on the rare occasion they do utilize cotton, employ a unique manufacturing process where 97% of existing cotton on the market simply doesn’t make the grade.

Components of the lounge-wear are so fine, that only a handful of mills worldwide have the technology and expertise to spin the ‘Superfine’ by Willy Herman fabric. Tani works exclusively with one mill in Austria responsible for creating fabric so fine, it’s literally impossible to see through, creating unprecedented fit, durability and most importantly, comfort.

Now, as both an athlete and menswear enthusiast, I’ve had some pretty cozy boxers and briefs touted as “the best ___ in the world”, though due to my own laziness, I rarely sort out my laundry to a T and wash/dry them the way their supposed to be (Sorry ‘n’ shit – who has time for that anyway?) Therefore, although they may be stupid comfy when I first get them, they feel essentially like sandpaper after just a few washes.

After failing to wash the Tani garments like I should (the few I had left after others disappeared one morning ) I was pleasantly surprised to find they felt just as mindbogglingly comfy as ever – that’s true quality.

Like many of you, my roommate and I are both big gear-heads, and love looking around online to fantasize about finding a cheap Aston Martin or Porsche – a bit or a stretch for our still “very young professional” budgets. That being said, we still find ourselves spending more time than either of us care to admit customizing the newest Lamborghini Aventador, 911 or Ferrari 458 online, building our ultimate dream car/poster car to a T, ceramic brakes and rear diffuser and all. Although the six-figure sum at the end of the multistep online customization process if always disheartening, it prompted me to explore some more reasonable options…just kidding.

But really: My roommate remarked “I wonder what a fully loaded brand new Prius comes in at…I wonder if what you could find for that on the used market. I bet nothing THAT cool, right Christian?”

I was curious, and immediately hopped on the Toyota site to build a decked out Prius. With it being one of the most iconic and relevant hybrids on the market, with 184,794 units sold in in the US in 2015 alone, I was surprised to find my loaded Prius 4 Touring, in black of course, totaling a hefty $35,737 BEFORE tax and delivery.

After wading through this rather surprising customizing process, it was on to the fun part – what if I could find a Porsche for a Prius?

After browsing around in the local car classified and doing a bit of digging, I found some staggering options, further exacerbated my surprise that nearly 185,000 Americans would opt for a glorified dishwasher on wheels, only quieter, over a classic 911, the esoteric and timeless G-Wagen, a multitude of 500+ horsepower AMG Mercs, and even the pinnacle of automotive luxury, a Bentley. All for less than the price of a loaded Prius; in some cases even close to half as much as the Prius…

There was no emoji emotive enough to emulate my astonishment: Mind. Blown.

In conclusion, yes, you can find a classic Porsche for the price of a Prius. Here’s the 1985 Porsche 911 Carrera Convertible with 30k miles on the clock we found. So before you convince yourself you can’t afford an automobile with such character, take heart in the attached screenshots:

Although this stunning whale-tail booty’d ’82 911 SC is a tick outside of our budget, ie. a grand more than the loaded Prius, we felt it deserved an honorable mention. With shipping and delivery who knows, it might be under the Prius. Be a Porsche driver, not a Prius driver — happy browsing!

Whether keeping your water icy cold on a triple digit Utah day, or invigoratingly warm after a long ski day, Hydro Flasks is there. With unprecedented insulation technology, inspired by the honeycomb design of bees, Hydro Flask guarantees keeping your bevie’ at the temperature you want for at least 6 hours. With a 32 oz. volume, the wide-mouth edition is surprisingly light. This is due to the vacuum created by the lightweight TempShield double layer construction, eliminating the need for bulky bottom- or top-caps allowing you to get on with your adventure.
The Flex-Cap is crafted to be comfortable. Flexible, durable TPU material, and a new wide handle design mean you can easily carry your favorite beverage with you all day long, and broken carrying straps are a thing of the past.

We are not unfamiliar with Hydro Flask products, and have been astonished by how well they live up to the hype, as our own Nick True concluded using a laser thermometer in the past with their Growler to double-check their temperature claims. This one though is really next level, and due to the beefy 18/8 Reiner Edelstahl steel, could double as a deadly weapon – it even has a lifetime warranty. Hydro Flask works closely with 12 different charities, and donate 5% of their net revenue to these non-profit groups, with a focus on preserving the environment and the beauty it has to offer.

No matter how far away or close to home you’re going, the Hydro Flask will be there for your refreshment; be sure to grab one for your next adventure.

Now, I must admit, I consider myself a bit of an early adopter…but when it comes to much of my athletic gear, I like to stick to tried and true tools and methodologies. I still do much of my weightlifting with the same basic flat-soled converse I’ve had since my sophomore of college, which at this point are totally riddled with holes. You can make this work when you’re not moving very quickly, but after taking a particularly painful spill in my worn out Saucony running shoes, totally devoid of any tread after two half marathons and hundreds of training miles, I decided maybe I needed to replace them.

I opted for the New Balance 1080V5 N2 Asym-Counters. Really what I opted for was an excellent running shoe that is defined by having a neutral construction, the plushest heal in the game, designed to offer more support on the medial side of the shoe. Says a whole lot more than a string of digits and numbers, right?
I chose a shoe with these strengths because of an existing knee issue – its ultra plush heal relieves much of the impact on my knees, while maintaining a solid and sturdy construction throughout the rest of the shoe for a unique “springy” feel I had not encountered previously.

The “Asym Counter” construction offers more support on the medial (inside) side of the foot, as mentioned earlier, but what this really does is keep you body centered through your stride, reducing the likelihood of your foot rolling inwards (over-pronating) and actively correcting it. The N2 suggests the insole being “nitrogen infused” …I can’t really tell you what that means, but I can tell you it feels really really comfortable. A particularly unique feature we as petrol heads appreciated, are cleat-like nubs on the sole derived from the form of the motor-mounts in a car; both working to reduce vibration and make for a softer, crisper ride.

Although they’re “running shoes” I’ve found myself getting into the “bad” habit of walking around in them too – it really is like walking on a cloud, and I definitely understand why my Grandpa, not known for exceeding about a mile an hour on foot (but who can blame him at the ripe age of 83), exclusively wears top tier running shoes in his day to day. I definitely recommend checking out New Balances new running lineup, even if you’re not going to run in them.

The FITS Light Performance Trail quarters might be the best athletic sock I’ve ever worn – and get this: they’re not even designed with sports as the focus. The sock is supposed to be for mountaineering, labeled as a “hiking” sock, but being me, I decided to use them outside of their comfort zone, to see if the tall claims of performance and durability are really worth $18.99 a pair.

Initially, I was quite skeptical, and typically quite happy with my Adidas mid-calfs, which at that price, I could get a pack of three for. Once I slid these FITS on, I began to understand the difference, and why they’re currently sold out (sorry!): the engineered quadruple blend of Polyester, Lycra, Merino Wool, and Nylon truly does offer unprecedented comfort… but you’re not going to sit in these all day, although I can’t think of a better sock for that either, so let’s get to how they actually perform.

I wore them for an exceptionally grueling leg-day workout that encompassed lifts into the 400+ lbs range with flat-footed beater converse, and a solid 6 mile run in the New Balance 1080 V5’s. In both activities, and both shoes, you don’t want your feet hurting because your socks are rubbing you the wrong way – blisters 40 minutes into your run (or activity of choice) are sure to put a damper on your day, and likely the next few too. Although the Merino Wool offers many benefits on its own (anti-microbial, moisture wicking, fire-resistant, etc.), the real highlight of this sock design is the FITS heel lock technology, paired with their dynamic toe cup to make the foot planted within the shoe. It seems so simple, but again and again across sock brands I end up with friction on my big toe or little toe because of the toe seam. FITS offers the best solution I’ve come across yet with these two unique design elements on toe and heel. By creating the toe stitching out of Lycra, surrounded by the Merino Wool blend, the seam not only becomes elastic, but feels like it doesn’t even exist; like it disappears into the cushioned Merino. The intentional extra cushioning in the toe, arch, and heel make the ride even smoother, particularly important for someone like me who has experienced knee injuries that can flare up with insufficient support.

In summary, almost regardless of application or shoe (maybe not for your flip flops), this engineered sock will perform exceptionally, forcing you to redefine for yourself what a proper performance sock is – because even the most expensive and comfortable of shoes won’t cut it if the sock doesn’t.

Recently we went over the three core exercises you need — regardless if you’re prepping for summer, or wanting to make a lifestyle change. Number two on that list is the Squat. This, as previously stated, is the King of all lifts. It activates just about every aspect of your body in some form or another: every muscle in your legs for force production, just about every muscle in your core for stabilization of your spine, and even a large portion of your back to stabilize the weight.

Beyond how it makes your body grow, not many things are as mentally satisfying as slapping 435 pounds onto a bar and going ass to the grass for 3 reps – except for maybe getting 4 reps. And with all these changes come the need for new workout clothing, but that’s another article. So here is where we break down and elaborate on the proper technique you need to build some tree trunk thighs and some rippling calves. Here are the most important aspects of the motion you need to pay attention to:

Before anything else, making sure you have your feet properly set is critical to maximum force generation. So you will begin by taking both feet and placing them about shoulder-width apart with a slight turning of your’ feet outwards.2. Next up is making sure the weight is properly placed on your shoulders.

.Many gym-goers believe that you should have the weight set high up on your neck, and this is wrong and even dangerous. I personally aim to set the weight right on the scapular ridge – it’s the bony process that starts at the shoulder and progresses back and down your back. Many people make an issue out of how it hurts to put the weight on your shoulders, but that just means your traps aren’t large enough (yet)!

Now you’re ready for action: The down motion is critical for performing the exercise both safely, and effectively. The focus should be on keeping your head and chest upright as you move down, which is critical for maintaining proper posture in your spine, and allowing your hips to slide back and downwards while keeping the weight on your heels — like sitting down on a little stool. Your glutes should drop below the level of your knees (the technical term here is “ass to the grass”) meaning your thighs move beyond parallel with the ground; past a 90-degree angle with your calf.

The upward motion should strongly engage your glutes, quads, and calves. With the movement being lead by your chest to maintain correct form. Again, make sure your weight moves through your heels, not your toes. You are squatting here, not calf raising.

Recently, we discussed the different types of macro-nutrients needed for the progress every gent is looking for in the gym. Along with our macros, we also have to take into account our micros. Micro-nutrients are assorted vitamins and minerals that work synergistically with the big diet building blocks that macros contain, and are necessary for me to slay 300 lbs on chest day — or any day for that matter. Unfortunately, no one food contains everything, and so you will have to diversify your diet to cover your bases.

There are a total of 13 Vitamins and 16 Minerals necessary for normal body function, but here are the five micro-nutrient building-blocks critical for the gains you want to see.

Iron: Not only do you need to pump it, but you also need to consume it. This mineral is critical for cognitive and motor development and a key component of hemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying aspect of your red blood cells. Without enough iron in your diet, you can become anemic meaning that your O2 carrying potential decreases leaving you fatigued, out of breath, and dizzy. Basically, you can’t go ass to the grass like the champ you are on leg day, if your iron levels are low.
Sources include lentils, red meat, poultry, fish, lentils, and green leafy vegetables.

Iodine: This is another mineral necessary for cognitive development, but also can cause goiters which if you haven’t heard of them before, let google be your friend and give it a quick search. Now that you have the visual, I am sure you understand how #bullfrog should never be a thing.
Sources include seaweed, fish and most table salt.

Vitamin A: This vitamin is largely necessary for eye function as well as immune system function. Without it the risks for blindness and other disease skyrocket — you want to look like Bane, not sound like him, so make you’re consuming your Vitamin A and keeping your immune system ready and kickin’ for the next PR (personal record).
Sources include carrots, spinach, broccoli, milk, egg, liver and fish.

Folate: This is a general term for a complex of B – vitamins, which are critical for DNA production and protein metabolism…I mean brotein metabolism. Without folate, we shut the door on maximum gains before we even get started.
Sources include egg, dairy products, asparagus, orange juice, dark green leafy vegetables, beans and brown/multi-grain bread.

Zinc: A lack of zinc has very major implications for your health, it can cause anything from impaired wound healing to cognitive and motor impairment. Low zinc levels can even increase the frequency AND severity of diarrhea.. And we have all already had some close calls on those heavy squats before, so let’s not push it further and have to look for a new gym after hearing your bowels empty and “cleanup needed in the squat racks” over the intercom halfway through your set.

Sources include liver, eggs, nuts, cereals and seafood.

Key Takeaway: “They help significantly when trying to retain muscle strength progress while improving cardio-vascular strength. A good rule of thumbs is the more colorful the food, especially veggies, the better. Micro-nutrients are often an overlooked area, even though they’re actually just as easily understood as macro nutrients; your proteins, carbs, and fats. I attribute a lot of my ability to still squat 400+ lbs while training for my half-marathon to a micro-nutrient rich diet supplemented with a basic multivitamin. Nothin’ expensive, nothin’ illegal, just hard work and clean, high-octane fuel for my body.” – Ethan V. (ESS BA, PT)

Now that we have built a basic foundation of to understand what fuel the body needs, next week we will shift our focus to the gym, and what exercises will maximize progress any why.

North St Bags’ new “Scout 21” provides a versatile, no-nonsense style duffle bag that makes for a great travel companion. By lifting much of the excellent features their past bags offer, the 21 (derived from the length of 21”) allows you to fit up to 30L inside the 1000 denier Cordura® nylon Outer Shell, making it the largest bag North St offers. Its sturdiness is further underlined by the signature waterproof X-Pac sailcloth lining, making sure your belongings remain dry and out of harms way.

I used the duffle as a quick travel bag during a weekend retreat to Park City, Utah, and was pleasantly surprised to find my clothes dry after intentionally leaving the bag exposed to the elements.

The sailcloth didn’t soak, but just in case, North St has designed an additional zipper pocket roughly 6 inches wide and 4 inches deep in the liner to give particularly valuable items an added layer of protection. Attached within the discreet pocket is a lanyard for added convenience and security and makes for a great solution to the problem of stashing cards or keys that otherwise might be difficult to find. Because the bag is waterproof both inside and out, you can stuff a wet swimsuit in after a dip in the hot springs, and the bag is dry virtually immediately after taking it out, eliminating the need to throw it in the dryer, and making it an even more convenient and easy choice.

The stitching looks beefy and feels solid, the grips fused to the bag with 3 rows of white thread on each side are a nice touch that is both functional and visually unique. The red nylon ties attached to the zippers are also excellent visual highlights that make the zippers easy to find and easy to open and close, but also offer both a place to attach additional key-chains, clips, or ID tags. The color-way options are tasteful and classic, with bright blasts of red contrasted with more subtle blues and drab-greens creating a modern interpretation with functional benefits. The only real constructive criticism I can offer is to design the included shoulder strap with the same level of intent and quality as the rest of the bag – right now it feels rather flimsy, probably due to the tiny hard-plastic clips that really don’t like they could support serious weight, the way the rest of the bag does. In summary, North St’s heritage of designing and producing heavy duty cycling bags here in the USA is clearly visible in the Scout 21, a more versatile alternative to their messenger bags, and successful foray into a more lifestyle and travel oriented direction.

Check out our insights on the Seagull Commuter Sling, another popular choice we suggest for those always on the go.

Although specifically created with cycling and commuting use in the focus, I found it a great baselayer for exercising in due to way the 4-way stretch fabric moves with your body. Together with the seamless torso, which completely eliminates any chaffing, the custom blend of Merino Wool, Modal, Coolmax, Nylon and Spandex make for an exceptionally comfortable fit. Be aware however, the piece is a definitely a baselayer, and although it contributes to comfort and performance, even my XL is very formfitting.

“Baselayers are a natural extension of our product line, but it’s a new category for us. So we wanted to make sure we got it right before bringing it to market.” notes Kyle Ranson, president, Showers Pass.

Many other high performance baselayers I have, including those from Under Armour and Nike, are typically quite elastic, but can also become uncomfortable due to the buildup of perspiration making them a poor choice for longer strenuous activities, as I unfortunately concluded midway through a recent half-marathon. Showers Pass’ solution to this problem is found in their unique fabric blend that utilized the unique qualities of each fabric to effectively cool the body in the areas where it sweats most, making for an all around more versatile package. Not only have they put extensive consideration into the fabric choice to maximize comfort, but have even gone so far as to develop specific knit-patterns that further improve ventilation along the spine, and from the under-arms to mid-core.

Because you’re so used to these areas becoming heavy with perspiration during an active day, myself included, you don’t realize how much more effortless your workout feels with the additional comfort the Showers Pass Baselayer offers.

“We surpassed all of our design goals, and are excited to round out our line and offer our customers another well-conceived high-performance garment.”

In summary, it immensely helps your body regulate its temperature – because less latent heat of vaporization (the biological process of sweating) occurs due to the intentional construction of the shirt, the Baselayer can keep you more hydrated, more comfortably insulated, and less likely to get a chill too.

Alright, we have explored the nutritional essentials and habits necessary to fuel your body for physical performance, now what exercises will make the best use of those nutritional building block, and allow you to see the progress you want as soon as possible just in time for pool season?

Compound movements —

Think of compound movements as the “big movements.” The three core compound movements are the bench-press, the squat, and the dead lift. We can call these compound movements due to how they integrate a multitude of muscles into the movement, and by doing so, ultimately engage and cause growth in a larger number of muscles compared to other movements specific to a particular area such as an isolation movement. The reason describing these as the “big movements” is appropriate because they all ultimately engage and grow a larger number of muscles than other exercises specific to a particular area (an isolation movement). Big movements = big progress.

Now, the benefits here are two-fold: the first is quite obviously that you are engaging more muscles, meaning each rep results in more progress, rep for rep, than an isolation movement that only targets one muscle. During each of the big three (Bench-Press, Squat, Dead lift), you’re constantly using muscles throughout your back, arms, and core to balance the weight naturally as you move through the rep from start to finish.

Beyond this, because you’re using more muscle fibers as a whole to stabilize the movement, you naturally elevate your testosterone levels – this is particularly applicable to the squat and dead lift where the lift engages your legs, where the largest amount of muscle mass in your body is, triggering the most natural testosterone production and growth.

The Bench-press: Although the bench-press is considered a chest exercise, it really is an exercise for so much more (and not just your ego). As you bring the barbell to and from your chest, you utilize your triceps in your arms, your core and legs to keep you body flat, and even your traps and shoulders to stabilize the key muscles, the pectorals in your chest.

The Squat: Once again, although the hamstrings, quads, and glutes provide the majority of the force as you go ass to the grass and back, your core, lower back, and calves are all activated too, as they help stabilize throughout the movement.

The Dead lift: A movement that makes you feel like a monstrous caveman moving boulders, the dead lift predominantly engages the hamstrings, glutes, and spinal erector, but also the traps and calves to stabilize. In additional to these larger muscles, grip strength also plays a critical role.

In summary, you can make immense progress with just these three basic exercises that simulate natural human movements of pushing, pulling, picking up, than any of those crazy looking bow-flex machines that just end up collecting dust in your garage. My training partner and I still do days where the only exercise we do, is one of these three compound movements – they are still the most difficult, most exhausting, and most fulfilling workouts.

The following posts will explore proper technique for max gains and safety for each movement from both the physiological perspective, as well as personal tips I’ve learned improving from not being able to push my own body-weight a few years ago, to pushing twice that now.
