No, it’s time for you to have a frank conversation with your vehicle. Oh I know you’ve been patting it on the dash or wheel, maybe whispering to it in traffic, and occasionally yelling in anger. But that is all surface level. Like Dr. Phil says, you need to dig deeper. Modern cars are putting out enough information every second to fill a book, but do you listen? No. Instead, you just wait for some dumb light to come on your dashboard then ask yourself what in the world that picture of an engine with a lightning bolt means.

Underneath your steering wheel is a sort of computer periphery plug called a OBDII port. The name is not important, so forget that I just told you that. Instead, just find the piece of plastic that looks like a giant VGA cable receptacle. That’s your car’s mouth. It is screaming all kinds of facts and error codes and diagnostics there every second, and you just keep ignoring like the selfish punk your aunt Terry always though you were.

But no more! While these ODBII scanners used to be exorbitantly expensive, cumbersome to use, and reserved only for the dorkiest of car lovers, there are now a plethora of simple plug and app combos that cost under a hundred dollars and have much more functionality than those old scanners. One of our favorites is the BlueDriver, which allows you to see exactly why your engine light is on, check your emissions, see your MPG and engine load, and more. While there are several different ways you can buy just a bluetooth scanner and then a standalone app to read it, the BlueDriver is one of the few full-package solutions. This no only guarantees functionality and a no-stress install, but the UI is downright better and more thought out than many of the solo paid apps.

Insulate and Finish Walls

In the previous update I passed SMOG, installed the side graphics, and got the car tuned up. So what’s left to do? Fixing some gremlins, installing a performance chip and pretty seats, and a reckoning on just how much this project cost me in time and money.

I haven’t done much to finesse the powertrain, save for installing a race exhaust and a performance chip. For the latter, that involved taking out the car’s ancient 1980’s computer, prying off a chip with a screwdriver (fancy!), and installing the 911 Chips doodad. Curiously, when I opened up my CPU I discovered that the car already had a performance chip from a lesser-known outfit installed. Nevertheless, 911 Chips is supposed to be the go-to chip supplier, so that’s what I installed. I’ll give it this, it smoothed the cold engine response and almost eliminated the exhaust drone in 2k-3k range. Well worth it.

Once the computer was replaced in the car, I could install my new seats from GTS Classics. These are something a little special. I had this great firm out of Texas take their existing Monte Carlo seats and marry them to the motorized seat pan of my factory seats. Vintage look, modern function – pretty much the whole theme of this build.

As to the small problems I’ve been chasing – the transmission hates going into 3rd gear, the doors don’t lock, there’s some minor fit and finish issues with the headliner and sunroof, and it needs an alignment pretty bad. I know this because my set of front tires on the car scrubbed off their outer edge in the blink of an eye. So that was fun.

Basic items first, I took the car into a local Porsche tuner to get an alignment, in case I need to be driving it around to other shops to fix the other items on the to-do list. Luckily, while there, they identified that a small bushing was the cause of my shifting woes and I was able to knock out these two problems at once. The door lock problem was traced back to the fact that I tore out the central locking button, so I needed to bridge a connector to make the motors work. Fixing all these small problems was the easy, and frankly never-ending part. This is a vintage car after all, little issue are going to pop up all the time. The hard part was running the math on what this project cost me.

I’ve saved every part receipt for this project since day one, so the actual collection and addition of the costs was easy. What hurt was running the final SUM function on the Excel sheet and seeing in black and white just how financially irresponsible I am. So let’s just jump right in to my idiocy:

I bought the car, sight unseen on eBay, on October 26, 2014 for $21,000. I then immediately gave myself a budget of 1 year and $10,000 to complete my RS 2.7 backdate. I vividly remember being angered that one forum-user openly mocked these targets and my naiveté. He thought he knew better than me. He thought I had no idea what I was talking about. He thought better mechanics than me have taken twice as long and spent three times the money on just such a build. He was right.

When I got the car in front of me in November of 2014, I carefully calculated that if I worked diligently every night and weekend on the car I would have my dream complete by Christmas 2015. Remember, this was a mechanically sound but ugly Porsche. All I needed to do was install an interior, change the paint color, swap out the hood and tail, and upgrade some mechanicals, . How hard could that be? Obviously since this article is timestamped in 2018, pretty damn hard. All in, this build took me three years two months, and cost me $39,318.17.

Yes, I realize that’s a long way from one year and $10,000.

I completely failed in keeping to either my calendar or my budget. Tasks that were so simple to put down on a gantt chart turned out to run into snags, both physical and mental. I know, I know – break out the Crayolas and color you surprised. But what I learned along the way to completing this car makes that all worth it.

About halfway through the project, I came to look at it as a kind of self-led vocational school. I suddenly was forced to understand how automotive brakes and shocks worked. I had to figure out the fine art of bodywork. And I had to learn how to weld. These things can never be forced from my brain. I can crash this car, but I can’t crash my knowledge. Suddenly, a RS 2.7 became the trophy, with the skills and self-assuredness the actual accomplishment. Over 3 years and 2 months, I learned that I can stick to a cause and sacrifice countless hours and personal time for something I believe in. Spending $40k, I realized what I’m willing to prioritize for my goals. I learned not to sacrifice what I want for what I want right now. I made time with friends count. And I realized that smacking your head against the same problem can be solved by walking away for a few days and letting inspiration come to you. THAT is why this project, and this car is called “The Point”

And you know what? I got a benefits out of this project I never counted on either. I met all my neighbors by being in the garage every night and weekend. I made friends with the more stable homeless people who wandering down my alley at night. I helped complete strangers fix their bikes and scooters. I’m now the go-to guy on my block when your car won’t start, or you need something welded up. I’ve received helping hands from very good friends and complete strangers. I’ve gotten encouraging words at every step along this project from tourists, bums, and good friends.

I can crash this car, this vehicle, this object tomorrow and I’ll still have all of this. This white Porsche is now worth far less to me than who I am now. When I look back after parking, my smile is because I built that – with the emphasis on “built” far more than the “that.” I started a kid who learned from his father how to do an oil change and swap a flap tire, and now I’m the kind of person who has clutch spline grease on his shelf. I’m different now.

Go after your dreams people. Sacrifice what you need to in order to achieve them. Sacrifice time, money, and most importantly who you were when you started. Shoot for the moon, and grab a whole bunch of stars on your way to landing there. It might take you a year, or it might take you 3, but there’s no time limit on improving yourself.

Then Odin wants to keep Jane handy as bait, and Thor disobeys again and teams up with Loki. Most recently in Ragnarok, we learn

Captain America: No dad issues to speak of. Dude’s a boy scout.

Black Widow: Basically raised in a Soviet murder academy with no parents to speak of. She had this to say in Civil War:

“…I went back to Russia and tried to find my parents. Two little graves linked by a chain fence. I pulled some weeds and left some flowers. We have what we have when we have it.”

Peter Quill: The entire second Guardians of the Galaxy movie is devoted to Peter’s messed up dad. He’s an intergalactic player who impregnated lonely ladies on planet after planet, including Peter’s mother. Then to go above and beyond player status, he gives her brain cancer and kills her for reasons that make sense only to him. Eventually he tries to use Peter as a battery and the Guardians have to kill him.

Gamora: Her dad is Thanos! He adopted her after killing her family, then pitted her into combat with her “sister” for her entire life and trained her to kill in every conceivable way. Her dad then kills half the universe. ‘Nuff said.

Nebula: See above, but add torture, body part replacement, and being made a bargaining chip just to get information out of Gamora.

Ant Man: This one is a little different. Scott is a dad and just wants to do the right thing for his daughter. The crimes he commits – of which there are many – as both a thief and a costume are to provide for her or protect her. Being a dad is his entire motivation as a character.

Spiderman: Here’s an orphan who’s adopted father, Uncle Ben, tells him the words that will haunt him and every movie he is ever in. Then he promptly dies because Spidey made the wrong choice. He “killed” his “father” by being a bad person, and it haunts him every day.

Black Panther: Again, the father pathos is a central theme of an entire movie, this one being the record setting blockbuster bearing his name. Turns out his dad did the really shitty thing in the early 90’s of killing his own brother and abandoning a small boy to the wilds of Oakland. Good call! The whole second act is T’Challa finding out what his father did and rejecting him over it in order to plot a new course for his kingdom.

As you can see, I’m not making this up. The Marvel cinematic universe has serious daddy issues. I don’t know what happened to Kevin Feige, but let’s just say I wouldn’t be surprised if he spends his Thanksgivings crying into his turkey just wishing his father would have hugged him more. Somebody go play a game of catch with this guy before the next Avengers movies is all about Thanos killing every father in existence!

At this moment GQ has hitched it’s proverbial wagon to The Aspirational Lifestyle, to fashion over style, and to banal advertorials instead of unique journalism. It is no longer about being a gentleman, improving yourself, purchasing quality, and in-depth journalism. To put a fine point on it, Gentleman’s Quarterly has become unreadable.

Pick up last month’s issue, I challenge you. In it, you’ll find exactly what kind of body you’re supposed to be coveting, how to be high in front of your kids, and thorough breakdown of Brendan Fraser’s Hollywood comeback. Seriously. You’ll also find the first ¼ of the magazine dedicated to advertisements, and thinly veiled ads in the rest of the magazine. Going through, page by page and adding up their recommended looks, you’ll need at least $103,293 to live the lifestyle they are advocating. That’s in one month’s magazine, and they come out with 12 of these a year. So if you have $1,239,516 in discretionary income every year, this is the paperback for you.

Aspirational publications are fine. Magazines for the 1% are fine. Avant-garde fashion is fine. But by concentrating on any one of these, and especially by trying to be all three, GQ necessarily loses the ability to continue claiming that they set the male agenda for a majority. They lose moral ground on which they can claim to understand how the modern male dresses, thinks, and lives.

In their effort to fill their pages with enough new advertisers and items for you to buy, they have completely detached themselves from timeless style, opting instead to live firmly with and only with fashion’s fickle trends. The term “GQ” continues to be a by-word for style, but that has not been reflected in their pages for a generation now. Instead, the publishers are pushing an unattainable or frankly ridiculous vision of what the modern man should wear, consume, and have opinions on. But they have no stake in what you actually wear, just what their advertisers want to push are paying them to advocate.

GQ has been out of touch for a while now. They completely missed the emergence of hipster fashion until it was coopted by the likes of Gucci, Ferragamo, and rag & bone 2 years later. The same goes for athleisure. And street wear. By definition, they are not setting trends but following them. Another, much larger trend they are being willfully blind to is the fact that clothing purchases as a share of consumer spending are way down in US – 20% down. That’s Armageddon for GQ’s advertisers. It’s little wonder that we’re seeing a push from fashion houses to have Quarterly advocate for them – what we’re seeing are desperate gasps in the form of massive amounts of advertising dollars. If F24 was GQ, it’d be hard to turn down that money. I get it. But it’s still the wrong decision.

So we’re left with an out-of-touch magazine advocating an aspirational lifestyle to a market that no longer aspires to the same things. Indeed, “things” are out, and experiences are in. So what is a modern gentleman to do? Reject GQ and it’s unoriginal consumerism. See the magazine for the pusher of expensive brands that it is. This isn’t Gentleman’s Quarterly, it’s Italian Fashion Houses monthly. Here’s an idea, make your own style. You know who you are. You know what you like. You don’t need a glossy paperback to tell you what’s cool. You’re cool. Buy stuff you wanna buy, and wear it with confidence. Life will follow.

Last time I said the endgame had begun. Nope! The Porsche project isn’t done with my soul yet. But I shouldn’t blame the Porsche; I should blame California and its SMOG emissions testing. These damn hippies and their environment! When will they learn that we’re at war with nature and it’s winner take all!

But I digress…

The astute followers of the FactoryTwoFour Instagram will have noticed that I buttoned the car back up and took it in for its emissions inspection on July 22. That’s right, July. That’s how spectacularly it failed the California SMOG tests. It took me six months to fix the car and write this update. But I can say it’s a good story.

First of all, I took it into my friendly neighborhood Armenian inspection bay to get the car all legal. After about 10 minutes the gruff owner snarled that I had failed. I thought this was very interesting as the car had passed two years ago before I dropped the engine out. Knowing that I did nothing major to the motor – just fresh hoses, a valve adjustment, and a general exterior cleaning, I was confident it was something small and stupid that was throwing all my emissions off. Fine, no problem.

True enough, I found a couple of loose hoses to tighten up, and I went back to the same shop for my free re-test the next day. In very Eastern-bloc English, the owner waved me away as soon as I pulled in. “No no no. I cannot take your car. Machine broke. Your smog too dirty. Clogged my machine. Have to have a service call. The machine is broke now. Cannot take your car again.”

That’s right, my engine was outputting so many pollutants that I clogged his machine, and he has to get a service call just to get back in business. So that’s great.

Freaked out but still eager to see if my hose tightening fixed the problem, I found my second-favorite neighborhood SMOG station and wheeled the Porsche in. Same as always, this called for a run on a dyno to measure pollution, then a pressure test of the fuel evaporation system to check for leaks, then a verdict of pass or fail. And for the second time, it was a fail, and this fail was accompanied by huge exclamations by the tech of how dirty the emissions were. “Very dirty! I’ve never seen numbers this high! This engine is in trouble!”

Not what I wanted to hear.

At this point, I had little option but to drop the motor for the second time to double check all my work and find out why the engine is performing so badly. So that’s what I did – drop out the engine again (see Instagram on Aug 12) and started rooting around, though I truly don’t see anything out of place. The spark plugs are a decent color if a little sooty. Everything is still connected and looks right. I find new hose diagrams and disconnect and reconnect a few items just to verify solid connections. I installed a new one-way valve to prevent oil from getting into the cylinders, even though the previous valve looked and acted just fine. I even had the fuel injectors completely rebuilt by a race shop and blew out my hard fuel lines to remove any contaminants. After all this, back the engine went into the back of the car, and I was off for test #3. This all took two months by the way.

And test #3 is a……fail. Same exact numbers on my results. Fine. So I dump $600 on a new catalytic converter, and now we finally saw some progress. Instead of failed for five different categories, now I failed for three.

Okay… Well, at least now the measurements weren’t pointing me to simultaneous lean and rich conditions. No, now the test results were consistent with lean running. I likely had a vacuum leak somewhere, and I finally felt like I could solve this.

I’ve played vacuum leak Where’s Waldo before, on this damn car in fact. I knew what to do now. Or did I?

First up was running the engine while starter fluid sprayed strategically around the intake manifold, the newly re-installed injectors, and the connections for various air hoses. No discernable change in the running of the engine, as is supposed to happen when you spray the leaking area. Time for the big guns then. I grabbed my small tank of propane and a hose and started purposefully leaking explosive gas around my hot, running engine in all the same spots above. Again, no change in RPMs, at least not that I could hear. I was stumped, and no amount of Internet forum searching was clearing up the cause for my SMOG numbers. So I gave up. If I was going to get this heap on the road, I was going to need a professional. So a professional I sought out.

Not just any professional would do of course. I needed a shop that would be willing to walk me through exactly what was wrong, not just hand me an invoice. The forums pointed me to just such Porsche whisperer by the (appropriately German) name of Jan who works out of a secretive (but fully decked-out) shop, always at night and are invitation only. Perfect. I secured an introduction and left my wounded Carrera in his hands. No less than 24 hours later, he let me know that he’s already identified the problem and can practically guarantee a passing SMOG grade when he’s done.

The problem, as in so many areas of my life, was my fault.

When I adjusted the valves – a routine maintenance task mind you – I did such an imprecise job that two of my six cylinders were not working at all. That is certainly a reason to fail SMOG. Jan fixed up the valves, and because he’s an actual professional and not a dumb Polack throwing hammers at the engine (like yours truly), he also performed a leak-down test the 29yr old and 183,000 engines to see how she’s been holding up. His initial skepticism based on the number of oil leaks was thankfully replaced by shock at how well the engine held pressure and was therefore in pretty good shape.

I’ll be honest, when I drove the 911 into the shop (with no plates, no rear bumper, and a bungee cord holding the rear deck closed) it felt very uninspiring. I doubted whether three years of effort had been worth it. It drove like a sedan. The engine responded, but it was hardly athletic. Picking the car up from my secret shop, the performance was transformed. The acceleration was brisk and enthusiastic (2 more cylinders will do that…). It was immediately clear that all this pain, money, heartache, and social isolation had been worth it. Two days later, I take it to the same SMOG station I’ve visited five times before and passed. Sixth time’s the charm. Now let’s button this project up and be done with it.

Sure, with our Mybooks and Facespaces we carry around a lot less physical paper than our ancient ancestors of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. But glance around any office and it’s clear that we men still pack enough stuff every day to need some kind of bag or carrier. Some professions can still rock a briefcase, like lawyers and government officials, but these last bastions only stick out more by sticking with the breifcase. For the rest of us, our daily bag is left to be an outsized statement on our personality. As it stands, you can roll with a backpack, but that Jansport only makes even the highest paid CEO look like a rookie and an intern. There’s the nylon and kevlar messenger bags, but these just serve to make you look like your headed to your shift pulling espresso shots for those making more than your minimum wage. And…there’s not much else.

Luckily there’s a new breed of hybrid briefcase/satchel/messenger bag that will lend any level professional the air of respectability without making you look like a Mad Men superfan. Think fine leather rather than ballistic textile, quality metal fasteners instead of recycled seat belts, and classic lines superseding your collapsing Jansport. A perfect example of these qualities is the Dooney & Bourke Brooklyn bag. This is half messenger, half briefcase, and all style. Here is the kind of bag you are looking for, one that can go from the Fortune 500 boardroom to the startup shared desk without ever looking out of place. It also works for travel as well. Whatever bag you choose, it should be able to tick all these boxes to keep you fresh and prevent you from looking like you’re on a break between classes. That’s right, the Jansport doesn’t quite fit that bill.

Here’s some guidelines for your new carry-all:

• Leather will have the most upmarket look. Textile can work, but make sure it will age and wear well as you throw it around your life
• Gotta have a strap. Otherwise it’s a briefcase or a purse
• Pockets are to bags what knives are to the Swiss army – the more the better
• Look for a bag with an exterior zipped pocked. This makes grabbing keys or pens much easier than having to open a large flap or unzip the main pocket
• Top carry handles are not exactly a must, but you’ll miss them if they are not there (trust me on this one)

Now go forth, get yo’self a swanky bag and conquer your adult life free from the fear that you look like a sucka MC. You’ll take yourself more seriously, and others will as well. Can the right messenger get you the job of your dreams? I’m not saying that it can’t… And while your co-workers at that job have their Every Day Carries stuffed into their cargo shorts, you’ll be waltzing around with all your swag in classic and versatile messenger bag.

If I’m wearing blue jeans, I only wear Levi’s anymore. There are several reasons for this. They never go out of style, or become “last-years brand.” The cuts are reliable and available everywhere. Speaking of which, they are always on sale somewhere. There is no reason to pay full price for a pair of Levis. $30 gets me a pair of pants that last 1-2 years, and I wear them hard. The pairs I wash less or wear less frequently are going on 3 years. That’s good looking pants for $10 a year!

Sears of all places is my go-to spot for picking up a new pair. They are cheap as dirt there, but with the same selection and sizes of any glitzy mall store. The jeans the Strauss built have the great dual quality of being neither pretentious nor low rent. I don’t know what the positive version of the dual-edged sword metaphor is, but we’ve found an example here. Levi’s are neither anything to be ashamed of or proud of. They just are.

I once read a denim designer admit that even with all the bells and whistles, with rhinestones, whiskering, stonewashing, and all, the maximum it takes to produce a pair of jeans is around $40. Why then, are you content with paying up to $200 just for a label? Forget it. Grab what your dad grabbed, and move on with your day.

Pro tip: Cut off the cheap paper logo on the back of your new pair. It’s no longer made of leather so it ages really quickly, and no one needs to learn what size your waist is just by staring at your butt label.
