I started out by taking a photo of my current zone setup and removing the old control. Mounting the new Rachio 3 was a breeze, and I had the zone wires back in their right spot in less than 5 minutes total.

Plugged in, the Rachio 3 has a blue light across the middle and nothing more. The main controlling is done from the Rachio app on the phone, which quickly found the device and let me connect it to the WiFi for our smart devices. Yes, our smart devices in the home all run on a separate network from our computers, but that’s another story. Running through the app was a breeze with tests of each zone, controls letting me pick everything from the vegetation type to slope of the yard. 10 minutes after opening the box, my full yard was set up and under the control of the Rachio 3. That’s it – 10 minutes from start to finish. Management of my yard has been beyond a breeze. I get notifications the evening before the sprinkler runs with its nightly plan, as well as a report afterward. I can open the Rachio app and make adjustments, like when I wanted to increase the watering of the vegetable garden a bit, and everything is done in a snap. And if I want to start the sprinkler for a manual run, my options range from direct control on the Rachio box, asking my Alexa to start sprinkler, or opening the app.  This is exactly what I have been looking for all these years.

And how does my yard look? Amazing. To be honest, it’s never looked this good and I could not be happier with the improvements and health of my yard. It’s even helped fix dead grass areas that have been the bane of my stress all these years. And all without excess water waste. While another tech seems to be the luck of the draw when it comes to the upgrading, the Rachio 3 hit the mark right out of the box, delivering exactly what it promised and bringing a better sense of control and understanding to my yard. Let’s be honest, nobody is ever ready for back to school. While I don’t have kids, my wife is a teacher. Since the beginning of school, it has been non-stop routines and schedules. Gone are the spontaneous trips. They are now replaced with hours of lesson planning and grading. My weeks are spent on the road, crisscrossing the country for meeting after meeting, enjoying the fine hotel restaurants and various airport cafes along the way. Often those meals on the road are spent alone, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but it does lead me to miss the act of a good home-cooked meal with family and friends.

Out of these missed moments have come some of my favorite though – the celebration of coming home for the weekends. Calling up various neighbors and family for the long afternoons in the backyard, we find ourselves surrounding the grill as the food for the day gets cooked.

There is something incredibly primitive about cooking over a fire; to have the hot coals searing away at whatever vegetables, meats, fruits, or other delicious entrees need a bit of heat. Charcoal is my go-to for constant, easily maintained heat on the grill, and with Kingsford Match Light Instant Light Charcoal, I don’t have to worry about losing an eyebrow to lighter fluid. A new college semester means new classes, new roommates, and new gear. You only get to make one first impression, so you better come correct. We’re not saying there is only one right shoe to get or backpack to wear – the opposite in fact. College is about learning about yourself and defining who you are going to be. Show up to your first day of classes proudly being yourself and showcasing your personality. Don’t think you can find the waffle iron that really speaks to your Doctor Who love at the mall. Nah, the best place to find unique back to college gear is on eBay.

You can’t neglect your room either – whether you are in the dorms, have an apartment, or are still crashing for free (save that chedda!) with roommates Mom and Dad. Your room has to grow up from High School and move on to college too. Get an adult chair, a real desk, and a panda stapler. What – we’re talking personality here, aren’t we?

Finally, you gotta look good. I mean, of course, better than you already do – which is going to be hard to do but I think we’ll manage. If you’re a T-shirt and jeans kinda guy, class it up a bit with a Henley. A collared shirt guy? Relax a little with a bright polo. And if you’re a tank top guy – just stop. Stop now. Jeans are an every day classic and dead easy to do. No rhinestones, any holes or cuts should come with a good story, and no cargo pockets. For these reasons and more, it’s hard to go wrong with Levi’s.

Coffee is one of my few vices I truly never hesitate when it comes to indulgence. I’m not talking spending big money for the smoked-blended-iced-caramel-thing. No, I’m talking true, real coffee – the stuff that gives you a nice wake up when needed without the harsh bitterness of the mass-produced. It was in college that I found my love for this deeply roasted nectar when I worked for a small coffee roaster, learning everything from how to roast, temperature variations, blending, and pulling the perfect shot. Those were simpler times, but my love of coffee has not changed.

In those days, I was the biggest fan of single origin coffee, especially Ethiopian and Costa Rican. Just like wine, you can tell so much about a coffee plant when you taste a single origin. Now, let’s get something straight – coffee should not taste like the black tar that our parents would drink or that you find at the local gas station. You should not need sugar or flavors to make it taste palatable. Good coffee, when treated right, will unravel its flavors in a very dynamic manner, and roasters like Alumbre Coffees have caught my interest when it comes to my morning cup (or three) of Joe. I’ve been tasting a whole slew of the coffees from Alumbre over the past few weeks, so let me point you in the direction of the ones I just love.

Ethiopian – Yirgacheffe – Roasted Medium

When I say I love Ethiopian single origin coffee, I mean I will buy it no questions asked when I see it light or medium roasted on a shelf. The Alumbre is no different. This Ethiopian single origin coffee takes me right back to why I fell in love with coffee, delivering some incredibly bright notes of lemon and lightly roasted berries. Taking a sip, the lemon hits the tip of my tongue before transitioning into the smokiness coming off the roasting process. This is a slower roast for sure, and even at a medium temperature and color, still maintains a brightness and almost lightness to the whole sip.

French Roast, Dark

I cold brewed this batch of coffee and do not regret it one bit. Deep, dark tobacco notes on top of the heavy smoke from the long roasting time made this an incredible coffee to have in the morning. I loved looking into the coffee grinds while in the water and seeing the oils from the roasted beans floating on top, waiting to be mixed in with a quick stir for my next cup. The notes on the French Roast are very sudden, hitting hard with the dark caramel and smoke, transitioning smoothly to a heavy tobacco sweetness before mellowing out. The little oils collected in the cold brew process left a great sweet aftertaste that made me come back for more.

Colombia, Alma Del Cafe De Jardin®, Medium Roast

Honestly, I have never been a big Colombia coffee fan – it’s delicious, but never blew my socks off. But, that said, Alumbre delivers one of the best Colombian coffees I have ever had. There was a hint of roasted cedar in the bag, and as it sat brewing in my French press I watched as the mid-dark color enveloped the water while this semi-sweet aroma floated off. But the taste is where I was amazed; it starts with a semi-sweet chocolate and smoked cedarwood, but then the cedar drops away leaving the chocolate to linger. Yes, yes, in every way, yes. I was sold on my first cup of Colombia coffee, but clearly not my last.

There are plenty of occasions when giving your car a full suds-and-sponge wash just isn’t efficient or practical. For me it’s been working on FactoryTwoFour’s project Porsche. It’s getting covered in dust and splatters of headliner glue as I assemble the interior, but I’m not about to break out a bucket and suds it down when there’s no glass in the car and nowhere in the garage for the water to drain to. Or consider my daily driver that had a tomato thrown at it by a homeless man (true story…). Point being, there are myriad times when a spot clean is needed on your ride.

They sent me a pack to try out, and I’m telling you these wipes are the best thing to happen to the carwash since chamois. The idea of remote employment and working from Portland one month, then Memphis the next is quickly becoming widely accepted. This is because almost all of the roadblocks to setting up a temporary life in a city have been removed in the last 10 years. I am a man of routines. Of many routines in fact. From my morning routine (writing, breakfast, news, work) to exercise (start the week with legs, end with arms), to weekly meal-prepping every Sunday night – but we’re not here to talk about that. We’re here to talk about my oil change routine, aren’t we?

Now I hope you’re already on a routine of regular oil changes to keep your car or truck running right and true. You know I am, and you better believe I have a routine that goes with every oil change. It starts before I ever get dirty. First stop is to recycle the oil from my last oil change and at the same time pick up my new oil and filter from the auto parts store. Not only does this leave me with an empty oil receptacle, but the trip warms up my car enough to start draining the oil. The next steps are pretty standard fare – drain the oil from the sump or reservoir, then change the filter, and finally top it off with a high-quality oil.

You might think that’s the end of your oil change, but my routine is not yet done. Fresh oil keeps my engine’s internal parts moving smoothly (side note: did you know that in a properly working engine, none of the moving parts ever actually touch each other? Your oil is there to create an extremely thin layer between all the pieces of metal and prevent them from ever touching. Neat!), but my car does not run on oil alone. No, it needs fuel. Gasoline to be precise. And you can buy quality gas all day long, but you’re still going to accumulate deposits and contaminants in your filter & pump, inside your injectors, and on your valves and pistons. So as long as you are cleaning up your ride’s oil system, you better believe you should clean up your fuel system too!

I use STP Ultra 5-in-1 Fuel System Cleaner with every oil change to keep my dino juice flowing freely and all my components deposit-free. I like STP because it’s an American company that has been innovating in the petroleum industry since 1954. Also Richard Petty rocked that sweet STP car back in the 70’s. After a good oil change and fuel system clean, I always cap off the routine with a good carwash so I know my car is as clean outside as it is in the engine. Also, don’t forget the air freshener for a fresh scent. And that’s the full process until it’s time for the next oil change. I rent a room in my home to travelers. It’s free money for a vacant room and I get to meet interesting and sometimes disastrous people from around the world.
