Survival Skills Everyone Should Look To Master

The vast majority of us are fortunate to live in a world that is pretty sensitized. We do have trials and tribulations, but they are all within a society that is kept safe most of the time. It’s not like post-apocalyptic movies where we must fend for ourselves and really survive in a wild environment. That doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t want to possess skills that can help us survive, however. You might find yourself in the middle of nowhere or you might wish to go camping at some point, of course. The world may turn into a dire state at some point and we may all need survival skills that can keep us going.

If you are somebody who wants to explore a few outdoor adventures in the near future, it’s a good idea to know plenty of skills that can keep you happy and healthy throughout. Even the most basic survival skills can improve self-esteem and make you feel as though you can handle a lot of what is in front of you. You won’t be full of anxiety the moment things go wrong as you will see things as fun challenges. Knowing that you can keep yourself safe and ensure the safety of those around you makes you feel 10 times better. Here are just a few skills that everyone should look to master:

Building And Maintaining A Fire

Of course, fire is one of the most essential survival tools. It will provide warmth and light when you need it most. It will also give you a means to cook. A lot of people have no idea how to start a fire, but there are various methods. Of course, you could use matches and lighters but friction-based techniques are worth knowing. Understand the different types of tinder that can be used to make a fire. Once you figure this out, you must maintain it with proper airflow and fuel selection. Material like oak will burn and provide more heat while softwoods will ignite quickly.

Purifying Water

You need to drink water in order to survive, but you also need it in order to get through the day healthily and happily. Drinking untreated water can lead to serious illnesses. It is a crucial skill to locate water sources. You can do so by looking for signs of animal tracks, green vegetation, or low-lying areas. To purify water, you’ll find that boiling is the most effective method. Portable filtration systems and purification tablets will also work tremendously.

Hunting And Trapping

No, you might be somebody who is opposed to hunting, but it is a skill that is necessary if you ever find yourself having to survive. In a situation like this, it’s important to know how to hunt and trap as it will provide a steady food source. Understanding how to track animals in snares increases the chances of securing any meal. If you have a bowhunter, you have to select the right equipment. Using sharp broadheads, for instance, ensures a clean and humane kill when hunting. Mastering these skills guarantees that food is available even during challenging times.

Navigating The World Without GPS Tech

It’s extremely useful to use GPS navigation technology when we are lost, but we never know when that option might not be available. Every single person on this planet should learn to use a map and compass in order to understand their direction. A good start is to understand celestial navigation by understanding the North Star or the sun’s position. Learn to recognize natural landmarks and follow water sources in order to read an environment better. You will be more confident in the wilderness when you master navigation.
