Why Autism Supplements Are Important

Across the globe, around 1 out of 160 children suffer from ASD. It is a chronic health condition that impacts language, communication, and social interactions. Children who suffer from autism might also engage in repetitive or stereotypical behavior

A number of treatment options are available for autistic children, which are not only limited to occupational and speech therapy, behavioral therapy, play therapy, and obviously also medication for managing all those behavioral symptoms.

Apart from different types of therapies and recreational activities, it also has been noticed that some particular nutrients and their supplements can help in managing the symptoms of ASD among children.

In most cases, children with ASD usually avoid some particular food or food group. And as a result of that, a deficiency of those nutrients is witnessed. That is when the supplements come into action.

Supplements For Autism

ASD can not be cured completely. However, the symptoms can be managed with the treatment options we have mentioned above. Apart from that, some dietary improvements through supplementation and diet changes can be really helpful.

By choosing some particular supplements and better food choices, you can address autistic symptoms. This way, you can help your child manage daily challenges in a better way. Here, we will talk about some supplements and why they are important for ASD.

Vitamin D

It has been found that Vitamin D has an effect on the brain’s neurotransmitters; it helps the brain to form new connections along with strengthening connections that are already present. A number of researchers found that children with ASD often lack vitamin D.

A recent study has found that children with ASD who get vitamin D supplements on a daily basis have shown decreased core symptoms of ASD, like impairment in social interactions, engaging in repetitive behaviors, and communication.

Vitamin B6 And Magnesium

Vitamin B6 holds the responsibility of enhancing more than 60 different biological processes in the body. This particular vitamin is broken down by an enzyme called PLP in the body. Some research suggests that this particular enzyme is not as effective in children with ASD.

For proper production of dopamine, the happy hormone in the body that helps in controlling the reward center of the brain, the PLP enzyme is required. At the same time, magnesium is crucial for the proper functioning of muscle and brain cells.

Vitamin B6 and magnesium supplements formulated for addressing autism symptoms can help with some ASD symptoms like an upset stomach.

Melatonin

It is a hormone that is naturally produced in the body and responsible for regulating our sleep-wake cycles. Often children with ASD suffer from sleeping difficulties, and that is why it is frequently used for treating insomnia.

Research has found a connection between low levels of melatonin and the severity of ASD symptoms in children. Studies also have shown promising results in using melatonin supplements with children with autism.

Omega 3 Fats Or Fish Oil

For eye and brain development in humans, omega-3 fatty acids are essential. As per research, often, children with ASD show lower levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their system. The best part is that as a way to supplement omega 3s, fish oil is available for buying over the counter.

In the year 2007, a study was conducted, and that children who get omega-3 fatty acids as supplements had shown impressive results in improving some of the symptoms of autism spectrum disorder or ASD.

NAC

NAC or N-acetylcysteine is a supplement that increases the level of the main antioxidant in the body. This antioxidant holds the responsibility of contributing to the natural defense system of the body because they protect the body from the damage of free radicals.

It has been seen that children with ASD might have a lower level of this antioxidant. Here, the NAC supplement can help in improving the levels of antioxidants. A study has found that it also helps children with repetitive behaviors.

Some More Supplements

Apart from the major supplements we have mentioned above, there are some more supplements that are also helpful for children with ASD. Here they are.

  • DMG / TMG.
  • Vitamin C.
  • Methyl B-12.
  • Sulforaphane.
  • Oxytocin.

Conclusion

Several types of research have shown impressive effects of supplements on managing the symptoms of ASD. Still, a lot more research is required to claim something medically. It will be best to consult with your physician before including any supplements in your child’s diet.
