Utah’s Epic Brewing is one of my favorite breweries outside of Colorado and California due to their large line up of extremely well made beers, and their Imperial IPA is my favorite of all their IPAs. Epic is currently moving the majority of their brewing operations from Salt Lake City to Denver due to Utah’s somewhat draconian brewery regulations and as such their beer is more available than ever. I picked up a 22 oz bomber of the Imperial IPA and drank it out of a standard tulip glass.

The IPA poured a bright golden yellow with a deep and pillowy pure white head forming immediately and dissipating quickly into a thin halo of frothy head. The nose is not overpowering with the floral notes of the hops subtly shining through begging for a first sip. The palette had a slight biscuity malt that is not to syrupy but rather crisp and clean with hop notes present but in no way overwhelming. Floral notes dance on the edges of taste as the IPA finishes clean with a stereotypical mild bitterness. This beer drinks extremely easily for 11% abv so use caution while enjoying.

Epic makes some of the best IPAs on the planet and their Imperial IPA is king of their IPA mountain. If you want to experience what an Imperial IPA can and should be you need to pick one up today.

If you have been reading my column here on FactoryTwoFour for any length of time you will notice that I love beer, I love cocktails, and I really love experimenting with new beer cocktail hybrids. I have never been an ecstatic fan of brunch cocktails; I find Mimosas a bit sickeningly sweet, and most Bloody Mary’s have become over-complicated races toward the absurd with too many flavor notes acting at once together. Enter the perfectly balanced ‘Gin and Juiced’ beer cocktail with Rebel Juiced IPA by Sam Adams.

On its own Rebel Juiced IPA pours golden-orange with a pure white medium density head that builds tall and quick. The nose is dominated by tropical mangos and a bit of a yeast note lingering on the edges. The palate is dominated by the mango notes and citrusy bite of the hop profile. Rebel Juiced IPA ends tart and crisp with a bit of a lingering taste of fruit peel on the tongue.

Rebel Juiced IPA really shines when used as the center piece of the Gin and Juiced brunch cocktail. First gather your ingredients:
3oz Sam Adams Rebel Juiced IPA
1oz Dry Gin (I used and recommend Boodles, or a comparable English Gin)
3/4oz lemon juice (fresh squeezed is always best)
1/2oz honey syrup (I used and vastly prefer agave syrup)

Add ingredients, except beer, to an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Stir, strain into an ice filled cocktail glass and top with the Rebel Juiced IPA, garnishing with a lemon wedge. The resulting cocktail is an accessible yet deep and refreshing brunch classic that will satisfy any palette. The floral and Juniper notes of the gin play and dance exceptionally well with the Mango IPA as the syrup sweetens and mellows the hop centered mouthfeel of the beer.

This is a great morning drink that anyone in your brunch party would enjoy, so step up your game and introduce all your friends to this Rebel Juiced IPA based brunch cocktail.

After getting off the river where I drank a couple straight out of the can I poured IPA by Oskar Blues into a pint glass. Immediately a low-density but deep pure white head formed over a rich golden brew that is a bit hazy due to the hop content of the beer. The nose is a bit hop forward but the strong notes of citrusy tropical fruits was the most surprising facet of the multidimensional beer. The malt centric nature of the beer has a solid refreshing base due to malted barley and red wheat that is extremely clean with a smooth mouthfeel, opening up the palate for the deep hop flavor to come. There are a multitude of hops in this brew that give the IPA a depth of flavor that is unparalleled yet the clean base and refreshing finish keeps everything in check, making it a perfect beer to sip on the water under the hot summer sun.

If you are looking to have a lazy day in the mountains or in the water be sure to pick up a six pack of IPA by Oskar Blues. The clean and refreshing nature of the beer encapsulates the nature of Colorado’s pristine water perfectly while its depth adds new facets to a beer that you will not tire of.

The minute I heard about Traveler Beer Company’s IPA Shandy my mind instantly jumped to an iconic Jeff Goldblum quote, but with a boozy twist: “[your brewers] were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn’t stop to think if they should. I honestly questioned why this mashup was even necessary and if it could even be pulled off successfully. After my first taste most of my fears were laid to rest as I saw that there was indeed room in the massive craft brew industry for a spunky new amalgamation of the IPA and Shandy styles. Traveler is not known for playing it safe by just releasing one safe and dull beer after another, it takes risks and ventures where few breweries dare and in this case it has created something wholly unique and true to Traveler’s delicious absurdity.

Pouring from a bottle into an american pint glass Traveler IPA Shandy viciously builds a thick and dense pure white head that dissipates very slowly over time. Traveler uses seven different hops in the brewing process and the result is a nose that is hop forward and dominated by grapefruit scents that ready the palate for the of menagerie of tastes to come. The flavor profile is this beer’s most unique quality; its hop dominated nature is complimented and subdued by the citrus acidity of the grapefruit and smooth drinkability of the Shandy style. Due to even and clean carbonation, a balanced palette, and a mere 4.4% abv there is little aftertaste to this brew making it an easy drinking favorite that most people would find quite satisfying.

In all, Traveler has a strong track record of taking the Shandy style and applying their extremely creative twists such as they did with their Lemon, Grapefruit, and even Pumpkin iterations. I am a fan of each of these and this IPA Shandy is true to Traveler’s break all barriers and take no prisoners attitude. The IPA Shandy is yet another daring and genre-bending beer that while it may not be everyone’s forte, it will definitely please those looking for something bit more adventurous and non-normative. Pick up Traveler’s IPA Shandy if you are looking for an easy drinking IPA that is complex yet accessible and far more refreshing than any other IPA on the market.

Seclusion IPA from New Planet is a strong entry that stands on its own in a largely crowded India Pale Ale category, and it is also happens to be the best gluten reduced beer that I have ever had. This is one of the first beers to be introduced from New Planet Brewery’s innovative gluten reduced beer line and and it makes me very excited for what they have coming down the pipe. New Planet is using a novel way of removing gluten from beer that allows them to brew with actual gluten-filled ingredients such as regular malted barley and grains, then they use a special process to remove the vast majority of the gluten from the finished product. This is a real beer that has had its gluten removed, not the brown water substitutes that we are all accustomed to from other gluten reduced and gluten free options.

Upon pouring from the can to a pint glass Seclusion IPA builds a light and fluffy white head that builds quickly then dissipates into a nice thin foam that aerates the complex flavors and nose well. The nose itself is pleasant and slightly hop forward with a hint of malt that readies your palate for the taste that is about to come. The color is a light and clear amber copper that has a perfect level of carbonation that is uniform and releases the flavor and underlying notes well. The taste and mouthfeel is where this beer excels; it keeps to style perfectly with its hop forward profile that is present but not intimidating or overbearing. Seclusion finishes extremely well with a subtle but not overwhelming bite. The mouthfeel is smooth and the biscuity malts play extremely well with caramel overtones. Seclusion finishes smooth and clean with floral and pine notes.

Seclusion IPA from New Planet is a very well-balanced and formidable beer that just happens to be gluten reduced, I would drink this any day as a go to IPA when I am in the mood for something that is more on the mellow side. For those that have a gluten insensitivity or allergy New Planet Brewing it is a gift from above because for once they can finally enjoy a real beer made from real ingredients.
