Everyday Carry: The DROID Turbo by Motorola

The everyday carry is a big topic of conversation and research in our offices, especially as we are always on the go, traveling from city to city, hitting the road for weekend adventures, or a night on the town. And while it is nice to have all our ‘things’ with us, even the items that are deemed necessary, sometimes a few of those objects are there to supplement the downfalls of other necessary tools. For example, right now in my bag I have no less than 3 fully charged external battery chargers, one 6 foot cord, and a backup battery all for my phone alone. Five items to support one device. Now, I know this is a bit excessive, and you are probably thinking the same, which brings me to the point.

It’s time for an upgrade, and not just for my everyday carry, but yours as well. The supplemental batteries are so popular because the technology available just is not keeping up with demand. No longer are phones just phones, but they are computers, cameras, GPS, and awkward-conversation avoidance devices. Often, it has been that you must sacrifice speed and features for power and reliability, which again is not a choice many of us want to make. Luckily though, Motorola has heard my cry for help, and yes, I am taking personal credit for this. You’re welcome.

So as I travel from city to city, or head out for a night on the town, I don’t have to worry about always plugging in or missing out on that incredible photo opportunity in front of my because my battery will die that much faster. And while I am the resident photographer, often behind the lens of my full gear, it would be nice to not have to carry the camera with me everywhere, and knowing how the DROID Turbo performs, I won’t need to any more.

Motorola has heard our (my) calls for something better, and they have delivered not just on those wishes, but beyond the wildest expectations. The DROID long ago set the bar high for cell phones, and it is no surprise that this phone takes that standard of quality, performance, and functionality to the next level.

A Case For Daily Carry- The Knife

There’s a mutual feeling of hate and frustration among anyone who has ever bought anything packaged in that thick, relentless plastic. Whether it be a mundane household item or a gift, this same plastic requires the use of robust scissors or a sharp, sturdy knife. These are requirements, too, as anything less will result in further frustration or worse, an injury. The appropriate scissors are often a first option. However, this isn’t an item one typically carries with them. As a result, many resort to a knife as the second, more practical and less cumbersome choice.

Fortunately, selecting an appropriate blade that performs under the great stresses of opening over-engineered packaging isn’t an EDC baseline. In many instances, the most effective knife is not necessarily the most practical. A box cutter, utility knife, or 7″ KaBar might accomplish most challenges, but not frightening anyone glancing in your general direction can be difficult. The aesthetic designs may leave a bit to be desired too. Therefore, a balance is a justified importance.

The idea behind EDC urges minimalism and applying this approach to a knife can prove to be a beneficial decision. Most people seem to find that their job or lifestyle may define this choice. At this point it’s best to determine an acceptable price, blade length, optional external clips or safeties, and maybe even the composition of the steel. All of these factors can create the perfect knife for an individual. Though a blade should serve its utilitarian function, form should follow closely behind. Who doesn’t want a good looking knife in their pocket?

Regardless of defining characteristics, a knife is something you carry with you everywhere (except where prohibited, of course). As an EDC knife is something that finds refuge in daily outfit choices, it naturally becomes a tool that’s also used daily. It might seem over zealous to assume its aid in nearly all mundane chores of opening envelopes, packages and anything requiring a sharp edge, but, surprisingly, it’s used more than one would assume. The need for a small knife isn’t truly felt until you’re left without it. Adding this option to an everyday setup can offer range when tackling small tasks or more importantly, attempting to pry open that plastic packaging.

What I Carry Daily

As our lives get busier and busier, there are often those objects we find that we need to carry with us all the time. It’s not bad to have that comfortable bag ready to go. As sites like Everyday Carry are designed to show off what we tend to bring with us everywhere, it shows the trend to have those go-to objects. In some cases, the photos shown only have a few objects, while others show bags full of gadgets and other objects that, to me, might be a bit cluttered. My favorite tends to be the journalists and adventurers who have their multi-use objects and very specific tools in their bags. So I decided I would share what I carry daily for work, to stay connected and on task.

As I tend to stay busy and working even on the road, my everyday carry bag has morphed from just a laptop to even more, as I find that I am needing to stay flexible to what’s going on around me. While this is just my work bag, and my camera bag is filled with a whole other collection of necessities, this is my everyday bag for work. It’s a bit boring for now in terms of design (they did just open a new Timbuk2 store in Denver), the necessities are there. So here we go with my daily bag:

2 heavy pens
Stack of business cards
Chapstick
2 external 2600mHa batteries for my phone (I’m on it more than I should be)
