Embracing Exercising Outdoors: Tips To Get Started

Exercising outdoors has become more popular during the last 12 months. With summer now in full swing, many of us will be eager to spend more time outside. If you’re keen to embrace al fresco exercise, here are some tips to get started.

Exploring activities

Many of us will automatically conjure up images of weights and treadmills when we think about exercise. While going to the gym is enjoyable for some fitness fans, it’s not everyone’s idea of fun. The good news is that there are several activities you can try to mix things up and get in shape. If you like the idea of working up a sweat in the great outdoors, you can try everything from running clubs, hiking and cycling to kayaking, open water swimming, surfing, outdoor yoga, team sports, golf and tennis. Research local facilities, groups, and clubs, and think about how you would like to spend your time.

Buying or hiring the right equipment

Many outdoor sports carry risks, and you’ll need equipment to stay safe and reduce the risk of injuries. If you’re cycling, you’ll need to wear a helmet and high-visibility clothing. If you’re running or hiking, invest in comfortable shoes that have good grip. For open water swimming, it’s a good idea to buy goggles and a swimming hat. In many cases, it’s possible to hire equipment, which is a great option if you’re trying new sports, for example, golf. You can rent a set of clubs and then think about buying your own if you enjoy it and you want to keep playing.

Staying safe

Safety can be a concern when exercising outdoors, particularly if you’re in the city close to cars and trucks, or you’re out in remote areas trying to negotiate tricky terrain. The last thing you want is to find yourself looking for a bicycle accident lawyer. It’s not possible to avoid every incident but there are steps you can take to lower risks. Wear a helmet, make yourself as visible as possible, stick to cycle routes where possible, and indicate which direction you plan to go in by using your hands. For hiking, mountain biking and running in rural areas and national parks, it’s wise to check weather conditions in advance and pack a rucksack with a first-aid kit, warm clothing, snacks and plenty of water. Follow designated paths and let people know where you are if you’re exercising alone.

Enjoying the social aspect

Some people are apprehensive about trying new activities or getting into regular exercise because they don’t want to do it on their own. Exercise is not just beneficial for your health. It’s also a brilliant way to meet new people and enjoy socializing. If you can’t persuade friends and family to join you, consider joining a team or club or getting involved in group training sessions or activities. The Internet is a great resource for finding details of community events and clubs.

Has the arrival of summer got you thinking about getting in shape, or are you eager to spend as much time as possible outdoors? If you’re keen to embrace al fresco exercise, why not take these tips on board today?
