A Primer on Responsibility

Responsibility is something that seems to be melting away from the mindset of the modern folk. We are all too quick to blame and judge others for our failings as if most of us aren’t living in the freest and most privileged location in the world. Most of us have enough to eat, a place to sleep and people we love. For some, all those things are not available. It’s important to count your blessings where you can, and be grateful for them. It’s also important to find responsibility as the main structure provider of your life.

From time to time we could all use a little refresher to ask ourselves ‘are we doing enough?’ For the benefits of doing so, consider the following:

Care In All You Do

One of the important functions of aging and becoming wiser is that it should temper your need for danger. It’s important that when you bring children into the world, or if you simply want to be a responsible adult, that you should treat all people with care around you. This includes how you carry yourself and behave when heading on nights out with your friends, how you drive even if being covered by insurance companies for high-risk drivers, and ensuring that you care for your output on the Earth’s climate. This attitude of caring for yourself, your family and the society around you makes you a responsible citizen worthy of his place in the world.

Staying Informed

It’s important to feed our minds with the day to day knowledge of the world, or at least our local environment. To do this means we can contribute an opinion on something with at least some form of critical thinking. Thanks to sensational journalism with an agenda, it’s much harder for people to contribute their thoughts without either going against the grain or seemingly taking everything they read as fact. Staying informed helps you, the society around you, and the ability to stay upright and focused in the world we live in. It will also improve your life in more ways than we can count, giving you competitive mental edge not only upon those who might take your place but on the You of yesterday. This way you transmit ideas of personal responsibility and competence, important if you’re the head of a family.

Challenging Yourself

It can feel rather worrying to be challenged. It can stretch our minds and our horizons, and that leaves us feeling vulnerable. However, often if you don’t do this you can decay. This means that the people that rely on you, your family, your friends, and your colleagues will be let down soon enough. Standing upright while arranging your father’s funeral is something you will be prepared for if you’ve already made yourself into a responsible person able to stand up and challenge themselves. These attitudes leave their mark on you, and will make all of life much more colorful, even in the dark times.

When responsibly conducting yourself in these manners, you can become the better person, and the best version of you. After all, as George Eliot once said ‘It is never too late to be what you might have been.’
