Driving Across Europe: Everything You Need To Know

When planning a road trip in Europe, you will want to make sure that you have a strict itinerary, a plan of countries to visit as well as overnight stays. Once you have planned your entire trip, there are still a few more things to consider before you set off.

Make sure you have car and travel insurance

Before you take your car or hire car for a road trip around Europe, you need to ensure that you have the relevant travel and car insurance from the off. Think about choosing the same provider for both so that you can get a deal, and ensure that you are accurate with all of the information that you decide to give. Once you have this sorted you can have the peace of mind to travel across countries.

Check for toll roads

There will inevitably be toll roads at some point during your journey, and the lucky thing for you is the fact that most European countries use the Euro as its currency. Double check the costs and currencies before you set off and ensure that you have enough loose change in the front of the car to deal with any charges that may apply.

Keep a map in the car

Technology is amazing and there can be nothing which feels more space age than a sat nav and fancy navigation system. However, even though it works perfectly fine everywhere you go on a day to day basis, there will be areas which are more remote where your GPS will fail. Make sure that you keep the relevant paper maps in the car with you during the trip so that you know exactly where you need to go at all times. There’s nothing worse than getting lost in the middle of nowhere!

Know the local garages

Never ever leave for your trip without first checking where the local European auto repair centers are. It is crucial that you are aware of any local repair garages and that you are able to contact them should anything go wrong during your journey. This will give you the peace of mind to carry on your trip knowing that if something does go wrong, you have places to go for help.

Bring lots of snacks

When you get in the car and set off on a road trip, one of the main things you will want to bring with you is food. Of course, you cannot eat at the same time as driving, but you can have plenty of breaks for food and drink. Bring plenty of water, crisps and biscuits in a cooler bag and leave in on the back seat for when you need it.

Music!

You cannot have a road trip without spending time on some amazing tunes! You can make a playlist on your phone or iPod way in advance to play during the trip, or you can bring along a couple of your favourite CDs with you so that you can change them over whenever you get a little bored. Music is key to any travel, so bring plenty along for the ride!
