This deliciously dark treat is our bold Narwhal Imperial Stout aged in oak Kentucky bourbon barrels. Black as midnight, this intense stout is incredibly complex with notes of dark chocolate, rich roasted grains, and espresso seamlessly blended with hints of vanilla and toasted coconut with a slight touch of honey from aging in the oak spirit casks. Nearly as rare as its nautical namesake, try it out while you can because, like the creature itself, it will disappear into the blackness soon and leave nary a trace behind.

This style was first brewed in the 18th century in London for export to the court of Catherine the Great, an Enlightened Despot. Enlightened Despots were absolute monarchs influenced by the Enlightenment. Illuminatos (Latin for Enlightened) is made with ten different specialty grains, generously hopped, aged in premium rum barrels for as long as it takes and cold-conditioned on fresh vanilla. The all seeing eye is nearly upon us.

Brew Snobs United: The Unknown Brewing Co. used 99 Scorpions in this beer

This might be a name for the record books, and a mouth full of flavor for the average beer drinker. The full name of the beer is “La Jordana del Escorpion en Fuego Hacia la Casa del Chupacabra Muerto,” which roughly translates to “The Path of the Fiery Scorpion through the House of the Dead Chupacabra.” The beer is a 10.1 percent ABV Mexican imperial lager brewed with agave nectar, Serrano peppers and 99 real scorpions. It’s then aged on oak staves from tequila barrels.

Beer Snobs United: Kilkenny Irish Cream Ale

Kilkenny has friends in high places. Guinness brews it; Diageo, the world’s largest producer of spirits (Smirnoff, Johnnie Walker, Jose Cuervo, Bailey’s and Guinness) carries it; and Smithwick’s, Ireland’s oldest brewery, is where it originated. The beer is older than some countries, with a heritage dating back to the fourteenth century. The taste of their Irish Cream Ale can be described as Smithwick’s with less hops and a creamy head like Guinness. The amber brew has the rich aroma and flavor of toasted malt. It’s all at once sweet and creamy, offset by some bitterness and is available in both draught and canned forms.

Beer Snobs United: Collaboration not Litigation Ale

Lets just get together and friends guys! What do you say? Cmon, bring it in for a drunk beer hug!

Salvation. The name of two intricate Belgian-style ales, created by us, Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River Brewing and Adam Avery of Avery Brewing.

After becoming friends a few years ago, we realized we both had a Salvation in our lineups. Was it going to be a problem? Should one of us relinquish the name rights? “Hell, no!” we said. In fact, it was quickly decided that we should blend the brews to catch the best qualities of each and create an even more complex and rich libation. In April 2004, in a top secret meeting at Russian River Brewing (well, actually it was packed in the pub and many were looking over our shoulders wondering what the hell was going on), we came up with the perfect blend of the two Salvations.

Natalie, Vinnie’s much more significant other, exclaimed, “We should call this Collaboration, not Litigation Ale!” “Perfect,” we shouted! We celebrated deep into the night (or is that morning?). Fast forward to November 14, 2006. After talking about it for over two years, we finally decided to pull the trigger and Vinnie made the journey to Avery Brewing to brew his Salvation exactly as he does in his brewery.

The Thump Keg Rye IPA incorporates the same underlying grains used in the distillation of George Dickel Whisky, adding a subtle spice and bursts of smoky vanilla to the hop forward IPA. And it is amazing. Never have I seen a brew capture the magic of whiskey so perfectly. If only it was a touch hoppier. Still though, there is something about this beer.

Beer Snobs United: Pliny The Younger Triple IPA

I have reached the hop Mecca. Is there an IPA out there more sought after? Is there no bitter brew with such a legendary stance? I’ve reached the top of the hop covered mountain, and I’ve seen the other pale ale’s lingering around the base. Too bad it didn’t taste up to its hype.

Pliny the Younger, the man, was Pliny the Elder’s nephew and adopted son. They lived nearly 2,000 years ago! Pliny the Elder is our Double IPA, so we felt it was fitting to name our Triple IPA after his son. It is almost a true Triple IPA with triple the amount of hops as a regular I.P.A. That said, it is extremely difficult, time and space consuming, and very expensive to make. And that is why we don’t make it more often! This beer is very full-bodied with tons of hop character in the nose and throughout. It is also deceptively well-balanced and smooth.

An amazing beer that is getting rave reviews around the beer scene, this Brown Ale is aged in used Pinot Noir barrels from Sonoma County wineries for about 12 months with sour cherries, brettanomyces, lactobacillus, and pediococcus added to each barrel.
