5 Factors To Consider When Choosing Sports Equipment

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when buying sports equipment – particularly if you don’t know a lot about the equipment you’re buying. There are so many brands and models to choose from in any given sport. Just how do you narrow down the choices? Below are 5 factors to consider that could help you to make the right selection.

Cost

First of all, you should consider your budget. Sports equipment comes in many different price ranges. The price does affect the quality, although how well-known the brand is can also make an impact. Good quality brand new equipment typically costs upwards of $30 – if your budget is less than this, look into used equipment. Some online stores such as this cricket store allow you to search for equipment like bats by price range. This can be very useful for helping to narrow down equipment within your budget.

Ability

It’s important to buy equipment that is suited to your ability. If you’re picking up a sport for the first time, search for equipment that is marketed as ‘entry level’. More competent athletes may want to consider looking into equipment marketed as ‘advanced’ or ‘professional’. The latter type of equipment is more expensive, but is often made of more robust materials to handle rougher usage, as well as using complex manufacturing technology to improve aspects like comfort and power generation. If you’re a beginner, you should avoid buying advanced equipment – you are unlikely to notice the difference in quality and it will be a greater waste of money if you decide the sport is not for you.

Size

With equipment that you wear, it’s essential that you buy equipment in the right size. This includes equipment like helmets, gloves and shoes. With other items like hockey sticks and tennis rackets, there could be different equipment catered to adults and kids. Be wary that some sports bodies may require you to buy equipment in a certain size in order to compete (for example, many tennis tournaments have tennis racket length restrictions in place).

Reviews

Reading online reviews is one of the best ways to determine the quality of a specific brand or model. Aim to rule out any equipment that has lots of negative reviews as its likely poor quality. When comparing more advanced equipment, read comparison guides to work out the difference between different types of equipment. There may be certain features that are more important to you such as safety, comfort or durability, of which you can assess by reading comparison guides.

Condition

If you’re buying used sports equipment, the condition is important to consider. You don’t want to buy equipment that is too damaged as it may not last long and could even be unsafe to use. Buying used equipment in person can allow you to inspect the condition of equipment yourself. When buying used equipment online, make sure that high quality photographs are provided that show the equipment from multiple angles. An honest seller will mention any defects in the product description. If there are visible defects in the photographs that aren’t mentioned in the description, don’t be afraid to message the seller beforehand to find out more information about these defects before you make a purchase.
