In Colorado this week we experienced a brief snow storm and blizzard warning followed by a gorgeous 70 degree sunny day, and in this state that only means one thing: better weather is upon us. I love the changing of seasons because just like the weather and foliage we are met with a new crop of seasonal beers and spring/summer beers are among my favorite. The Brewer’s Project at St. James Gate by Guinness produces some of the best and innovative new beers coming out today and their Guinness Irish Wheat is no exception.

I poured the 11.2 oz Irish Wheat bottle in to an official 20 oz Guinness glass and a pure white head built quickly and tall but with minimal density that dissipated in to a perfect quarter inch fluffy blanket. The color is a beautiful golden yellow with a distinct wheat beer cloudiness and a nose dominated by wheat notes and subtle hints of spicy clove and banana. The Brewer’s Project uses the same original and unmodified Guinness ale yeast used in all their beers for over 200 years and it shows on the palate with a distinctly Guinness edge over a pure refreshing wheat base and noticeable notes of banana in every sip. The whole mouthfeel is crisp and simple with the fully wheat grain bill really shining here, making an easy drinking and refreshing beer that is perfect for hot spring and summer nights.

The Brewer’s Project hits it out of park again with Guinness Irish Wheat that is Guinness through and through thanks to a shared soul of the original ale yeast strain. This Wheat beer drinks more like a classic wit than an American unfiltered wheat with its refreshing, subtle, and clean nature. This is the perfect porch sipping beer for the warm seasons already upon us.

The Open Gate Brewery is the experimental brewing arm of Guinness and the specialty brewers there are continually producing some of the best beers that Europe has to offer. All St. James Gate Brewery beer is built around the same closely guarded strain of yeast that all Guinness beer has at its core for over 200 years and these beers are no different. Antwerpen Stout and Guinness Rye Pale Ale are both innovative and individualistic brews yet they each share the easily identifiable beating heart of the original Guinness yeast strain.

Antwerpen Stout was actually first brewed in 1944 and exported solely to Antwerp since the Belgian brewing industry was being decimated by the fighting of World War 2 and Ireland itself was able to enjoy relative peace during such a tumultuous time. This nearly pitch dark stout built a caramel tinged fluffy white head when poured into a Guinness pint glass that is perfectly characteristic of classic Guinness Stout. The nose is characterized by bittersweet chocolate with a hint of roasted malt and a bit of coffee aromas. The palate is dominated by dark roasted malt with notes of the classic Guinness yeast and a bit of raisin and licorice leading a sharp finish. Antwerpen Stout is a complex dark beer that is perfect for the darkening and cooling skies of deep winter. Light a fire, curl up with a loved one, and enjoy the one of the best beers winter has to offer.

The Rye Pale Ale was created by the Brewers at the Open Gate Brewery to celebrate friends and family during the upcoming holiday season and its heritage pairs perfectly with holiday parties and get-togethers. This Rye Pale ale pours a hazy gold when poured into a Guinness pint glass and builds a crystal pure white head that is fully Guinness in nature. The nose is very unassuming with light botanical notes and hints of toasted biscuit. The palette is very rye forward with a bit of a spicy bite balanced by citrus notes provided by a balanced Mosaic and Cascade hop profile. The brew finishes with a hint of peppery spice and a clean pale ale finish. Be sure you pick up Guinness Rye Pale Ale when you are headed to your next holiday party in order to impress your beer loving friends.

Antwerpen Stout and Rye Pale Ale perfectly represent The Open Gate Brewery at St. James Gate; they are creative and singular brews that contain the soul and ethos of the classic Guinness Stout. Treat yourself to something new and check out these amazing beers that have the soul of the legendary Irish brewer, and the exploratory spirit that makes craft brewing great.

On our first day we took a leisurely 4 kilometer walk across the entirety of the city center as we made our way from our hostel to our first destination; the Guinness Storehouse.

Guinness at St. James Gate is a sprawling campus that stretches multiple city blocks and is connected by underground tunnels and sky-bridges stretching overhead. Visitors are only allowed in the storehouse and not the brewery itself; it is a visitor friendly complex where you can explore the various facets of Guinness and its history at your leisure while on a self guided tour. Here you can learn about Guinness’s brewing process, rich history, and enjoy installations such as advertisements over time, and the evolution of the brewing process. One new aspect which I enjoyed greatly was tasting the new experimental brews created by the Brewer’s Project at the ‘Open Gate Brewery’, Guinness’s small batch experimental brewery that is responsible for creations such as Guinness Blonde and Guinness IPA. By far the greatest experience in the storehouse is pouring your own pint under the direction of of an experienced St. James Gate bartender and then enjoying it as you overlook all of Dublin from the Gravity bar; it was obviously the best pint of beer I have ever experienced.

The next day, we headed in the opposite direction out of the city center to the Old Jameson Distillery. Before moving to the distillery in Cork Jameson produced all of its whiskey onsite in Bow street, right near Temple Bar. Jameson was the major employer in Dublin for over a century and its influence can be felt throughout the city even today as a major taste and trendmaker. After arriving we went on a guided tour where I learned more about Irish Whiskey in one hour than I had my entire life previously thanks to a passionate and knowledgeable guide. The pinnacle of our experience at Jameson was tasting various special reserves and limited releases, many of which were only available at the distillery.

The greatest aspect of Dublin however reside in its beating city center with Trinity College, St. Stephen’s Green, a dozen amazing museums and scores of pubs.

Pub life in Dublin is eclectic, energizing, and soaked in history; it is a true experience to behold. My wife and I had pints in no less than 14 pubs and they were all very different from one another yet shared many similar aesthetics. A very large number of these pubs exist now as they did 200 years ago with very little changed or modified; you could easily imagine Irish Nationalists sitting in the booth across from yours plotting independence from English rule a hundred years ago or a poet writing his next great work. It was an experience in of itself to just take in the history of each pub, trying to place yourself in the historical context in which they existed.

Did you know that Saint Patrick’s Day began as a “feast day” in honor of the anniversary of the day he died. To honor him, Christians would put aside their Lenten restrictions on food and alcohol consumption on this day alone, leading to the excessive drinking that has become so permanently linked to the celebration. While we are not advocating the excessive drinking, we want you to enjoy the right drinks. And who better to turn to than our great friends at Guinness for some properly crafted drinks (other than, of course, a Guinness) to enjoy for the day.
[nextpage title=”1″ ]Guinness Black & Blonde

10 oz. Guinness Blonde American Lager

10 oz. Guinness Draught

In a 20 oz. pint glass, pour Guinness Blonde American Lager first. Using a pouring spoon or inverted teaspoon, pour Guinness Draught over the top of the spoon so it disperses evenly.

The dark stout will float on a layer above the lager beer. Fill the pint to the rim and enjoy.

[/nextpage]
[nextpage title=”1″ ]Wilde Oscar

1 oz. Guinness Extra Stout

1.5 oz. Bulleit Bourbon

.5 oz. Rich Simple Syrup

Dash of Botanical Bitters

Stir all ingredients in an ice filled mixing glass. Strain cocktail over a large ice cube. This cocktail is also delicious when made with the signature Guinness Draught. Garnish with a large orange peel and maraschino cherry.

While I would like to think that everyone is a spirits lover, I know this is not true, so searching and testing long and hard, let’s make sure the beer lovers in our groups don’t get left behind at New Years. This is a new one for me, a beer based cocktail, that has the maltiness that many love mixed with the bubbly of a celebratory drink. In a way, this Black Velvet recipe brings a refreshing note to an otherwise dark beer, and is so incredibly simple to make.

From GUINNESS: This famous drink was invented in 1861 at Brook’s Club in London. Prince Albert had died, everyone was in mourning. The story goes that the steward at the club, overcome with the emotion of the occasion, ordered that even the champagne should be put into mourning and proceeded to mix it with GUINNESS®. The taste was so delicious the Black Velvet quickly became extremely popular.

Ingredients:

1/2 flute of Champagne (Again, we recommend a Korbel Brute)

1/2 flue GUINNESS® Extra Stout

Directions:

Simplicity is key, but so is patience. You don’t want to pour too fast or too much. Pour the GUINNESS® Extra Stout into a clean/polished champagne flute. Top up the glass with the champagne, being careful to ensure there is no overspill. The GUINNESS® Black Velvet should have a good dark colour with a frothy head, resembling a Pint of GUINNESS®.

Special thanks to GUINNESS for submitting their recipe to share with you all.
