Meals with friends can be lively and exciting events, but there is nothing exciting about when the final bill arrives; when you have to decide who, what, – and the ultimate – how the required money will be split. I too-painfully remember moments of not having enough cash, the situation ultimately ending in that all-too ambiguous “I’ll pay you back later…”

Honestly, I have failed all too often at doing that.

Imagine planning that big weekend with friends and finding the perfect rental to crash at, only to have members of that once big party drop out due to the difficulty of paying people back. Nobody wants to go to the bank, and our generation does not carry a checkbook. Hell, I can’t remember the last time I wrote a check for anything.

You could head to the bank (gross). You could shake the couch cushions (sometimes). You could even resort to breaking that piggy bank (don’t even think about it).

Instead, turn to tech. There have been apps in the past, but many have failed to take into account user experience and security, both of which are all too important. And let’s be honest – in this day and age, security and trustworthiness is big deal. There needs to be a better way to get the weekend planned, or the meal paid for, and ultimately have everyone’s money going to the right place. A secure, trusting way,

And there is. Now there is no financial excuse to miss out on that big weekend, dinner out, or even just paying what you owe a friend. Square, Inc., the startup that disrupted the small business payment industry recently released an app to instantly and freely share money from person to person. And with the ability to connect Apple Pay to the Square Cash App, it’s just plain easy. Now that is something I can get behind, even if it does mean I actually have to pay my share of the bill.

It’s over guys. Tinder has reached its zenith and there’s nowhere but down from here. It was fun while it lasted. We all had a good time swiping away while we waited in lines and for our friends to show up. Now the days of falling in lust and chatting with bots are over.

Some have gone so far as to declare Tinder dead. It’s not. But it will never be the same as it was at it’s peak 6 months ago. From hookup app, to game, to cultural phenomenon, to burn out. It has been a wild ride. Now we are all pretty sick of the game. Pretty sick of the crazy conversations. Pretty sick of the “strategies” and opening lines. But it gets worse that just our collective ennui about the app.

Big changes are coming with the next update that is being released soon. Gone will be endless swiping – thus also say sayonara to gaming the system by swiping everyone right and then picking through. By restricting the number of swipes you are allowed per day, the Tinder folks are substantively changing the experience of the app and who it is targeting. They are also adding some new features, but none are as big a seismic shift as the limited swiping. The good days are over. Tinder is a pure dating app again, and this means a mass exodus is around the corner.

I’ve certainly done my time on the app. Haven’t we all. I was never one for the endless right swipe; I actually did pick through and swipe women I was even moderately interested in. Over several months on the app, I only ever went on one first date. There was no second date. Tinder has always been seen as a hookup app, and every conversation I had was pregnant with that spectre hanging over the discourse. Was the other person just looking for some afternoon delight? Is this person going to go loony toons on me and chop me up into chihuahua food? So like most of its users, Tinder has always been a game to me. But now the rules are changing and the only people who will stick around are the 30% heavy users. Tinder isn’t dead, but it’s all downhill from here.

Like most modern gentlemen reading this publication, I too begin my day with a multitude of items on my to-do list – rarely if ever do I complete all of these tasks I set out to. In an effort to improve how efficient I am, I tried to isolate where exactly my time was evaporating. I quickly stopped lying to myself, and concluded it was my mobile device: “Just a quick scroll through Instagram before I continue this Design Theory paper”, “Ooh that WorldStarHipHop Top 5 Streetfights video can’t be more than few minutes…” and so on and so forth, until I had stretched a simple task much longer than it had to be, simply because I let myself be distracted.

I asked my roommates if they had any tricks, and one suggested I check out the application Forest to supplement my attention discipline. He even went so far as to state that the success he had achieved on his most recent O-Chem test he could largely attribute to the app instilling concentrated periods of studying in him. Obviously I was fascinated, and checked it out immediately.

Forest goes back to the basics – rather than organizing your tasks through some efficiency algorithm, or feeding you self help tips that you already know, Forest simply asks you to set a timer, with the button “Plant” to initiate the timer. A seed on your phone screen appears, and begins to grow into a a tree, its final size corresponding with how long you’ve set your timer for (between 0 & 120 minutes). If you exit the application before the tree has finished growing, and let yourself be distracted, your tree dies and you must begin growth anew. This makes for a simple and incredibly effective tool for when you really have to buckle down. A quick glance over at your phone and now the idea of killing the tree, and your progress, isn’t worth checking for that Snapchat update – you’re in it to win it and that means staying focused.

The number of trees, and types of trees (different trees corresponding with different periods of time) are tracked and presented in a calendar. Your successfully completed time periods can be viewed in the form of day, week, and month breakdowns, and show the forest you’ve grown. I sincerely recommend this application for anyone who lacks discipline when it comes to their mobile device and remaining connected. Whether you’ve got an O-Chem test or are running a hedge fund, this is a forest that helps you grow your productivity.
